Please help ; worm in system, reinstalled but didnt get rid

787 Views 16 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  fredmh
Hello,

I recently had to reinstall Windows 2000 on my home computer as it got infected with some sort of Lan Worm (or so i think) The last i saw of all my files was in safe mode trying to get rid of this worm with avg popping up every second.

i think its a recent one called 'Allaple.a' i am now treating it with the greatest respect as it shutdown most of my computers tools before wrecking the computer. Even with the reinstall im still getting the virus's i saw before i knew wat was wrong. Anyone had the same problem or can help me?

P.s. other names of virus/trojans ive found are 'diazom.aa'(which i cant remove) and 'worm-ircbot.mn' and other backdoor trojans like trojan Ranky.MB and a file called '.exe' keeps coming back.

also when i go to a website, 'savewealth.com/redirect' flashes up in the address bar.

Hope this helps

Steve

Just to add to this now i did a eTrust scan and found mancsyn.a, FTP Downloader and Rbot.FQP

Please help if u can!
Thanks

Steve

Please make every effort to reply to my posts in a timely manner. Malware breeds malware and the longer an infection remains on a system, the more

Hi again Fred,

I turned the computer on when i got back here and it would'nt start right. Got to the administrator password part and it said 'loading settings' then a minute later it said 'saving settings' and went back to the password logon screen. i also tried in safe mode but got the same problem.

I had to repair from my boot cd again which makes me think the virus is coming from the cd? as one of the files i deleted must have done that? before i turned off the computer to go out it said ' some system files have been replaced with unused ones' or something to that affect?

i really dont know, ill try all that again and see if the same thing happens.Any ideas urself?

Cheers

Steve

No I don't, but SD Fix did it's job. You can delete it for now.

I'll wait for the other three report - Panda - AVG - HJT log

your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product

IE-SPYAD IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
  • From within the folder, double-click install.bat
  • Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
  • Then return to the main menu.
  • Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

A tutorial for IE-SPYAD can be found here

MVPS HOST FILE The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file
with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to
those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

  • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
  • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
    Extract All from the menu.
  • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
    "Show Extracted files"
  • Click Finish

This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.

Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated
HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

MCAFEE SITE ADVISOR SITE ADVISOR is a free IE plug-in (also suport for Firefox browser)
which is used in conjunction with the Google search engine. It advises which web sites are considered safe and which sites could pose a problem.
It also shows what problems were encountered with each site, such as malicious downloads, spam, and related links.

Hey Fred,

Thanks again for your continued support and help. There seems to be no trace of virus or worm on my computer, although with the updated security it seems to be blocking out my windows live mail beta version, even if i put it to accept all cookies? its a minor thing tho as im relieved to have the virus gone!

Cud u tell me wat the registry fix thing was for please? im just curious as to what it did.

Apart from that, I think thats everything and we can close the thread.
Thanks again Fred

Steve
The registry fix deleted several malware items which showed up in your combofix log.
Hey fred,

just one more thing, it says in device manager that my pci device isnt working properly, theres a yellow question mark beside it. Porbably from me reinstalling windows. ive been to the fujitsu siemens website and the automatic driver thingy didnt seem to work. The computer works fine, although a little bit slower than before probably from the antivirus stuff etc. any ideas?

Steve
That's a bit out of my area. Please post in the:

WINDOWS XP SUPPORT forum. The folks there will be able to give you better support. IOW - I'd rather not guess
