I have tried to reinstall windows on my 1.8ghz amd athlon. The setup cd either freezes at 100% formatting or gets half way through setting up windows then i get error 'windows has detected a problem and is shutting down to prevent damage to your system'. My drive is still showing up as 38gb and is nowhere near full. Could this be due to a nasty virus?

Yes it could be due to a nasty virus, however there are many other possible causes. For example.

Does your Windows CD look like its been thrown around your backyard?

Are you formatting in NTFS or FAT32? And are you using Quick NTFS?

Did you delete the partition before installing over it? (most likely you did)

Is there any chance that some hardware may be faulty?

yes i did delete the partition before installing over it but I had tried reinstalling before that unsuccessfully. The CD is in mint condition. I am formatting in NTFS. I turned it on to try to reinstall and it kept giving me error 'NTLder' is missing. I reset BIOS settings to default and reset and now when it loads up I immediately get message 'CPU fan not running!' but it is spinning. I first tried doing a full format which reached 100% then froze, but tried a quick boot the second time.

hi,

I found some issues with bios/cmos and reset everything to default, booted from cd and have managed to reinstall windows successfully. Temperatures and fans all seem to be sweet.

Thanks for the advice.
