Ping and internet connectivity issues

My network was fine until I did a couple things:
1) Switched my cable modem for Comcast’s modem to save $25/month

2) Added an 8-port switch connected to a 5 port switch downstairs
I’m not sure on timing, but now I have the following issues that weren’t there before:

1) Xbox has a ping time of 200-400 ms, which makes real-time games unplayable. This is tested both within the game and from Xbox’s network utility. This is the only device with this kind of ping. Pinging on speedtest.net from xbox gives normal pings of 6-8 ms. Pings to speedtest.net on other devices on the network are also 6-8 ms. HOWEVER … I just did a speedtest.net test and ping from my computer is 149 ms. Download of 72 and upload of 7.8

2) From my computer, I’ll periodically lose internet connection. Perhaps once every few minutes to or more. Its difficult to say on how often it happens. I don’t use the internet all the time. I do notice it when I’m on a Skype call, or when I’m doing something that requires a live internet connection, like an RDP session. I also notice this on my phone, and on my daughter’s laptop when she’s connected either wirelessly or via a wired connection to a MS Teams session with her teacher. I’m not as sure of this symptom on anything but my own computer, though, because I’m not on the other devices as frequently.

When I first got the new cable modem, I used it in router mode. The xbox worked fine for a bit, but gradually the latency built up. I then changed it to bridge mode and put my old router back on the network. The xbox worked fine for a week after this, but gradually, the latency built back up again to where it stands today.

I’ve reset the modem and the router several times, to no avail.

.........................

Is this a wired or wireless connection issue? Both (xbox latency issue happens in both wired and wireless configs. Phone loses internet wirelessly periodically)

How to run and post an ipconfig /all output of the computer(s) in question for review.

I spent a few hours troubleshooting this today by doing the following:

Moving my router and modem to where the cable directly comes into the house, elmininating two other cables. (I tried connecting directly to the modem and the problem seemed to not go away.)

I then disconnected a number of other devices on the network and narrowed it down to my synology device. When I plug in the synology NAS, the network gets bad. When I unplug it, everything is fine.

I'm now uninstalling services on the NAS down to the bare bones. I'd installed some networking things on it, not really thinking much about it. So, one of those is probably causing the problem.

Thank you. Well, this isn't ideal, but I've decided to get rid of the Synology device. I've already spent too much much time fussing with it, and this will fix the issue. I'm going to install the drives from the thing into my computer.

I removed all apps except for the ones Synology won't let me delete, and the problem still occurs. Its pretty dramatic, too. My internet speed on speedtest.net will drop from 200 to 20-50 with the synology drive plugged in.

I'm suspicious that a virus or something embedded itself into the thing? That or a physical problem with the NIC on the device. Not sure. Anyway, its now sitting quietly on my table, drives removed...

Thanks for listening!
