Some time ago, I decided to install several updates onto my computer, such as a BIOS and a sound driver update. however, after performing these updates, I noticed a rather annoying problem: whenever I perform even the smallest action, I get very noticeable lag - more precisely, the PC takes a while to respond and the sound that should accompany the action takes a few seconds to play. The most obvious example would be navigating the Windows Explorer, where clicking on any folder on any Drive would take 2-3 seconds to load, and the little 'click' sound would play only after about 5 seconds. However, once a program is loaded (a video, a game) the problem seems to disappear and there is no noticeable lag. I originally thought this was a sound driver problem, but I have tried installing a bunch of different ones, with no result (though perhaps I did it incorrectly). I do know, however, that loading the PC into safe mode eliminates this problem completely, so this is almost certainly a driver issue, and not a hardware issue. I should also note that a a sound driver roll-back is probably impossible, since I have installed a bunch of different drivers since the problem arose. Some help would be greatly appreciated, as this problem has been slowly driving me insane. Thanks in advance.

Try a Clean Boot. If that works then add one startup item at a time rebooting after each Until the computer starts lagging, then you know that is the item that is causing the problem.

I've tried a clean boot - the problem disappears. I'll try adding the turning off the start-up items, see if that works.

However, I did notice that I had an old nVidia Sound driver, and promptly updates it (clean install). This largely solved the problem. However, after restarting the computer, the problem reappeared.

Wattage means nothing please tell us make and model.
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro RS850-AMBAJ3

However, I don't think that's the problem - I played around with the boot setting, and disabling the 'Windows Audio'service on start-up solves the problem. As I though, this is almost certainly a sound driver issue.

I've tried playing around with the sound drivers, and found out that when I don't have the High Definition Audio Driver installed, the problem disappears - the NVIDIA High Definition Audio Drivers don't seem to cause a problem. Obviously, this isn't a permanent solution, as I have no sound otherwise. It also appears that letting Windows automatically install a High Definition Audio Driver, instead of the Realtek Driver that came on my motherboard disk containing the drivers, reduces the problem, but doesn't quite remove it. Anybody have a better solution, or maybe an explanation?

Go to the Device Manager right click the RealTek device/Properties/Driver/Roll Back Driver to the driver that was working.

Go to Start/Search and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In Programs and Features uninstall all RealTek audio drivers. Restart the computer. Reinstall the driver from the CD.
