Hello. New to forums. Hoping someone can help me out. I am running a Pentium 4 processor with Hyper threading tech. with motherboard D915GAG. This of course is Intel(R).My problem is my processor seems to be over heating. This started yesterday November 11, 2008. As soon as its booted up, it instantly reaches the temperature of 204 degrees. I'm uncertain as to why it is doing this. I have done nothing differently to it.
All hardware including motherboard get extremely hot to touch. The hardware gets instantly hot just as the processor is.I'm uncertain as what to do to relieve this "stress" off my system. Please help.

Also, what is the normal/safe operating temperature of the P4 processor ?

how old is the computer, have you looked under the fan at the heatsink on the CPU to see if you have fluff on it or is the fan moving and is the case fan not working ,unplug the computer from the wall before you look

The processor and motherboard is only about 5 months old. I bought them both from xpc gear. Ive powered the computer down and checked for "fluff" and saw none. Everything seems to be tight fighting as its suppose to . The only fans running in the tower, are the fans on the power supply, and the heat sink fan over the processor. The powersupply fan is 7 months old.

First of all, you need a bare minimum of one fan in the back pulling hot air out of the case and blowing it out the back of the case. Then, one should have a fan in front pulling in cool air. My opinion is that those are a minimum.

Then, I suggest you change the thermal paste as per these instructions that I am including. Be sure you clean off the old before you put new on. Here are instructions:

Artic Silver Instructions

Note: Please report temps in C and not the F standard. That is what we use on the forum.

In response to the temps, they are in celsius : Processor zone 87c, system zone 1 38c, system zone 2 38c.

that could well be your issue ..... the smart power was a real clunker for antec ....... and the pentium 4 3.0 ghz or higher needs a 550 watt power supply ....... starving a system for amperage will also cause overheating!

look for the coolermaster real power pro 650 watt at newegg ...... it costs about $50.00 after rebate

Thank you . I will be buying a new power fan like you mentioned. When I bought the antec, the computer tech i talked with had told me at the time the 350 watt was more than enough. Only concern is though , will the coolermaster real power pro 650 watt work with my motherboard D915GAG ?

Hey evevryone. Been couple days since i posted a reply on the outcome of my computer issues. I ended up takin it in to be checked out.I had a new heat sink installed, temperature is now running at 40-45 degrees celsius. I installed a new power fan as mentioned, and everything seemed to be running perfect for the first day I got computer back. However my computer is starting to do the same thing again.

It's just shutting off but not because it is overheating. I have had this computer diagnosed and all tests come back saying everything is perfect. I'm at a loss here . i ran virus scans, spyware/adware scans all is clean. Any idea what else it could be ? I feel as if it could be something with the motherboard.

Thanks for all the help,

Hope

I'll try that. I in fact have another fan here i bought for back up. I'll try it see what happens. As is now, Only thing I have hooked up in this machine now is the harddrive, power supply, and my graphics card. I unplugged my rom drives from the IDE cables, and the IDE cables from motherboard.I'm wondering if possibly maybe the IDE cable is the culprit, or to many things hooked up causing it ? Either way, it's certaintly puzzling right now.

I would like to add as well, in order to turn on this machine now, you have to turn it on and off by power switch on power supply, which I really don't like to do. My power button on this machine works. So again I'm at a loss.

I'll try the other power supply and see what happens.

I installed the other fan I had bought for backup. Same thing is still happening. It's shutting down. The temperature is at 35-40 degrees celsius. I still only have the power fan, plugged in, (the back up one), graphics card, in the pci slot, power to the harddrive which is a sata drive.

So I have justt the minimal hooked up for what I'm wanting to use this machine for: Playing World of Warcraft. So now I'm still at a loss. I checked my system log on this machine, and it's giving me the error "Service Control Manager " . Could this have anything to do with it ?

I have the coolmaster 650 in the machine as suggested on the forum. It's still shutting down. I go to boot and received the error msg System Bios DDR2 . Then, from time to time it will manage to come up to go to desktop and it starts to delete "orphan" files while doing a disc check, then recovers them. Would this be a sign of bad memory/files ?

have you chamged the POWER SUPPLY to the 650w,it looks like your only changen the fan. if so change the POWER SUPPLY
