Hi,

I just installed a new WD blue 1TB hard drive into my DELL computer. after i had installed windows 7 and drivers, it shut down randomly. I try to do a dell diagnostics , but it shutdown during the diagnostic test. now it will not boot and it makes loud noise (sounds like vacuum cleaner).
Dell XPS 8500, OEM Windows 7 64-bit installed, nvidia geforce GT640.

Can someone assist me step by step? thank you in advance!

Few observations here... Could you, please, try to enter BIOS anyhow? If you are not able to enter BIOS, I'll assume that what you are hearing here as "vacuum cleaner" is the sound of your fan, working on maximum RPMs.

This indicates to me that you should do the following (by enumerated steps):
[1] Take out all the memory sticks (I assume you have them two);
[2] Power ON, to hear if you hear beeps, indicating POST audio codes;
[3] Regardless of the beeps, please, Power OFF, and input ONLY SOLE memory stick and see if you can bring PC up to BIOS?
[4] If not, swap memory stick with other one, and try the same?

Please, report your results here (all relevant, and if you hear beeps as well)!

Thank you,

Ans: 2 beeps

Ans:yes

[4] If not, swap memory stick with other one, and try the same?

Ans: can also bring PC to bios with the other stick

...fixed back two stick...After abt 5 mins , pc shutdown & it tries to restart but failed & it makes the " vacuum" noise again...Pl advise. ..thanks

Interesting... So, what you said/wrote to me is the following:
With first memory stick in BIOS ONLY, everything works (for very short time, few minutes).
With second memory stick in BIOS ONLY, everything works (for few minutes).
With both memory sticks in BIOS, it fails after 5 minutes? :confused:

So, please, do the following (targeting/testing now single factor - time ):
[1] Please, detach HDD;
[2] Please, place first memory stick (ONLY) in BIOS mode for at least half an hour, and see if PC fails?
[3] If does not fail, please, remove it, and place second memory stick (ONLY) in BIOS mode for at least half an hour, and see if PC fails?

It gotta to be one of these memory sticks is bad (after it warms up)... If they work solely in BIOS for 30 minutes, then they must work together in BIOS as well. For hours... But to simplify, we need to disconnect HDD, to have one variable less!?

And I re-thought even more... :grin:

To add to it... You can try one short test. Please, restore your system as it was before (with old HDD - remove out new HDD), and both memories in initial slots, and try to see if then it'll fail (from cold start)? This test will tell to us a lot! :thumb:

Ans:can bring PC up to BIOS and start windows normally... but PC shutdown after 20 mins and tries to restart... again & again & again...

[4] If not, swap memory stick with other one, and try the same?

Ans: insert the second stick... PC wont start & it only make "vacuum " noise

....Pl advise. ..thanks

PC wont start with old HD and it only make "vacuum " noise...

(old HD is not working...i did a Windows update 2 weeks ago but i stop halfway due to thunderstorm, i did a system restore and then continue Windows update the next day.

subsequently, my PC restart automatically after a few hours, so I did another system restore but this time the system restore was not successful, and now my PC is stuck in endless restarting cycle. so i bought a new HD to replace the old HD one.)

.Pl advise. ..thanks

Please, do the following:
[1] Do Power OFF;
[2] Remove all the HDDs from mobo;
[3] Please, take out power cord, and after 30 seconds remove coin battery for a good minute. Then, please, reboot without RAM, to hear beeps;
[4] Then do the same with both memories to see if you can enter BIOS?
[5] If yes, reformat somehow old HDD, and install WIN 7 and drivers to old HDD, if possible?

Please, report results here! :thumb:

All Good. If you need files to be retrieved, and you do not have other PC, proceed as you advise. The BIOS reset should help, and restore defaults.

If everything will work seamlessly in BIOS (with tests I already wrote here with one and two memory sticks, and hold for several hours), you could try to return your old HDD and see if by any chance it'll reboot successfully. Then, if this is the case, you should also mount second HDD and clone entire old HDD to new one or copy your data files).

Shoot! :banghead:

Please, try to do everything, but use JUST SINGLE memory stick and see if this will give you entry to the BIOS... Then, please, try to boot to OS with old HDD (do NOT use both sticks).

If the one stick does not work, please, swap, and do the same. Please, post the results of these tryouts here! :huh:

PC mount with new HDD. PC can't boot with old HDD.

[1] Took out all the memory sticks

Ans: 2 beeps

[3] Regardless of the beeps, please, Power OFF, and input ONLY SOLE memory stick and see if you can bring PC up to BIOS?

Ans:
1st stick (in 1st slot) can bring PC up to BIOS, PC shut down after 1 hr,
1st stick (in 2nd slot) can bring PC up to BIOS, PC shut down after 10 mins,
1st stick (in 3rd slot) can bring PC up to BIOS, PC shut down after 5 mins,
1st stick (in 4th slot) can't bring PC up to BIOS, fan spinning like crazy
no beeps

Things are, seems (with some grain of salt), very clear.

2nd memory stick is dead/kaput/fried. Do exclude it from the future equation, and remove from the desk (eventually) to garbage.

The BIOS beeping: good sign, BIOS is alive sans memories. It is also alive with the 1st stick. Assumption - your CMOS settings are, after momentum 2nd stick went south, all messed up.

Please, do the following: place 1st stick in the 1st slot, then remove power cord from PSU. Please, wait 60 seconds. Then remove CMOS coin battery for a good minute. Leave it out to drain CMOS Non-Volatile Memory (NVM).

This should help, since after returning CMOS battery, and powering ON, you'll have factory defaults. BIOS should come up. Please, try to bring your OS, and test it out for couple of hours (it'll be slow, since you have half of memory now). Please, report your results here. :thumb:

Good Luck!

i return CMOS battery, and power ON, BIOS came up. I bring to windows 7.. but PC shutdown after abt 20 mins..and then loud fan noise...

after 20 mins. i tried to do a memtest+ on the 1st stick... again PC shutdown after abt 10 mins of test...and then loud fan noise... i can't restart PC even after i upplug power ...

RAM (DDR) is healthy... The one U use. Motherboard has the problem. For sure. :banghead:

I'll give you the short description from my today's case. I got some test Broadwell PC (high end workstation). It would not Power ON at all. I changed whole PSU, put brand new one. Then it started working. Brought it to BIOS, every 30 to 60 seconds it froze. Then I started checking single DIMM (4GB DDR3). After that, it would not boot to BIOS at all. I did couple of tests... More tests. Nothing helped. And then I tested BGA socket. 8 screws, 2 of them almost unscrewed, 6 sit tight!!! I took the toolbox, screwed both screws, so it suddenly started working seamlessly. :whistling:

So my advice to you is the following: please, re-seat the CPU itself, clean it, and apply correct pressure to it in the socket. :thumb:

Please clean edge connectors on RAM cards with either an eraser to shine up the contacts or medical alcohol and try again ..
Make sure that the RAM is fully seated into slots after insertion. sometimes a layer of dirt builds up on connectors and prohibits working .. I had this on one of my ASUS motherboards, cleaning would help for a time but after placing into one of my other ASUS motherboards has been working fine ever since.
I should mention that I replaced the RAM that was originally giving me problems with a new pair before moving the old pair to the other motherboard.

The updates could just have been coincidence .. Fixing PC's requires patience and Logical method of faultfinding .. it also helps when you have a working PC with similar Hardware requirements so that you can swap out components.
