My Compaq is 7 years old and i have never had a problem with it. I just moved it to another room and once it was all plugged in i could hear a ticking sound every second, i looked at the back of the computer and the power light was flashing in sink with the noise. After reading the forums i changed the power supply from an adapter straight to the wall, no change. I then changed the power cable and still nothing happened. If i unplug the socket it stops. But it wont turn on, (obviously when i have it plugged in) Please help. Im lost without it already. I do have 98%of it backed up, so im not so worried about that, just that i don't want to pay for a new one

If there are no specific size configurations. You can purchase another Power Supply Unit (PSU) for any computer store or online.

i took the psu out, does it matter if i go for a more powerful psu? Or do i have to have specific inputs and outputs so as not to damage the computer. The complete model number is ATX - 300 - 12Z REV : BC. Id rather get a better one than a cheap one that lasts a year. Thank you again

More wattage wouldn't hurt. What does matter is the new PSU's connectors. You need to match the connectors of the new one to the old computer. Some new PSU's only have SATA power connectors whereas you'll probably need IDE type (some HDD's have both types as do some PSU's. Then some new PSU's come with plug in adapters for both types).

Then the main connector to the mobo would probably need to be the type where 4 pins disconnect from the main body of the connector...or, your connector on the mobo must have room for those extra pins to overhang without smooshing something on the board. So, check that any new PSU you get is 'Backwards Compatible' to a 20-pin ATX setup (most are). Any extra connectors are just not used.

That's great, i checked connectors and ordered a corsair gaming series gs700. So fingers crossed it does the trick. Will be straight on here to update later today.
