Running your computer with the side exposed is not recommended as it allows more dust etc... to clog the fans, etc... Best to find out why it is (apparantly) overheating.

First thing, install Everest Home Edition (freeware) and get a temperature reading, when idle and also when under load.

If the temps are high, and the cooling is adequate, I'd wonder about the thermal compound between the HSF and the CPU. Also, I'd wonder if the CPU fan might not be intermittantly bad. Speedfan will display a graph showing your CPU fan speed over an extended period of time, so that if it is slowing down or stopping occasionally, this will be shown in the graph.

Also, check BIOS and see what your shut down temperature is. It may be set too low, for some reason.

Also, the shut-downs may not be temperature related, but could be caused by inadequate power/voltages from the PSU, meaning it could be bad or going bad. Post your PSU specs so we can tell if it's "solid" in terms of quality ) and adequacy, or cheap (likely to fail) and/or inadequate for your power needs.

Post your full hardware specs (make, model of your hardware) so we can get some idea of how much power you SHOULD have, compared to what your PSU is supplying.
