PC freezes after sleep mode

Hello!
Recently my PC has been getting more and more sluggish and extremely slow to respond to commands. After it goes in sleep mode (when the PC is on and unattended for a while) and I move the mouse to wake it up, it takes forever to get it working again. Most of the times it ends up freezing (or locking up) and I need to do a hard reboot. Even when I'm not on the internet, the response time between a command/click and the action is very slow and more often than not I get a "Program not responding" message.
It's an HP Pavilion with a Pentium 1.6 GHz processor and 512 RAM running Window XP. I have Norton security and that should take care of all malware problems. Defrag and disk clean up didn't help.
Do I need a new computer or can this problem be fixed?
Thanks for your help.
