For about a week now, my computer has been freezing and crashing, and eventually ran into the NTLDR is missing error. I fixed that with the FIXMBR command at the recovery console. I finally boot up into Windows XP. I split the hard drive almost right down the middle, before even installing the OS when I first built my machine. As of now, my OS is on the C Drive, and my Backup partition was on D Drive. I can no longer access my D Drive.

Please tell me there is a way to gain direct access to my backup without recovering my files; I really need to clean install XP again.

Also, I know for a fact that everything is still on that partition, because when I started to recover data from it, I was getting files that I would have otherwise lost if the partition had gone corrupt/deleted.

Because the backup is bigger than the C Partition, there would be no way to recover everything at once due to the backup being almost 100% full.

Thanks, KillGore333.

The partition table is contained i the MBR, so the fixmbr command probably overwrote it. Can you see the partition in disk management? Not really clear if you are not seeing the partition or if you are seeing it but not able to access to it.

Yes, I can see it. Although it only tells me how much space it is supposed to have. The HDD was 250. I gave 97GB for my OS, and the rest for everything as backup.

You can try test_disk - it may be able to identify the partition and allow you to rewrite the MBR. Safer way tho would be to recopver the data to another disk. Partition finad and mount might work with a thorough scan, or r-studio or getdataback

Anytime my computer does anything deemed strenuous, like running a CHKDSK, Data Recovery, long and drawn out tasks like those, my PC locks up after a little bit, and then crashes. The Blue Screen never stays more than a second so I can't see what the error is. Would it be a good idea just to reinstall Windows XP and then try to regain direct access to my partition?

The permissions will be changed, I would recover the data first, the partition missing probably won't be fixed with the re-install. You can adjust it so you can see the blue screen by diasbling the auto restart in startup and recovery on the advanced tab of the system properties dialog. I would recover the data first then try to fix the other issues.

I still need to figure out how I'm gonna recover almost 130gb of media when I can't even recover 1/4 of it. I have no idea what's up with my computer, but it isn't a virus. I'm running Avast! Home Edition. The latest one.

Edit: By using Test_Disk, I was able to locate my files via the unnamed partition, and I just recovered a file from it. I know it's there, how do I get it to fix the MBR or whatever holds the link to that partition so I can access my files?

You need to scan for partitions, the docs will walk you through it as well as the sticky, you will probably have to write a new MBR if it can identify the files, understand tho if you write an incorrect MBR based on what it found, it could cause more issues.

Assuming my computer could sustain the time needed to recover data, I think I might just go out and get a 1TB external and that do it. I really cannot figure out what's going on with my computer, and why it keeps freezing. I've checked the Event Viewer several times, but all I see error wise is Error 11.
