When trying to solve this kind of issue I've often found looking back and working from the point when the PC was operating ok can be useful, i.e. "what has changed since things were working satisfactorily?"

As you say this issue can develop when you are not using your computer - I assume you mean you have no programs open and it's showing the desktop screen? - I think it's possible that you have something running in the background that is triggering this - be it a valid program or undetected malware.

I would suggest running Housecall to cross check your usual AV:-

Check-out greyknight's anti-spyware page too:-

The other thing to try is to go to Start>Run and type msconfig and stop some of your background programs that are running to see if that helps. You could begin by using the diagnostic start-up option to narrow the issues down. If it does help, reintroduce those programs that you do need running one at a time to identify the culprit.

If you can identify a time when things worked OK and you have a System Restore point available, it might be worth trying SR.

It is possible that you have a hardware component that is going down, but personally, I would eliminate all possibility of it being a software issue first - even if it means a reinstall of windows (try the "repair" option first, if it does come to a reinstall).

If you want to checkout your hardware, I would suggest starting with memtest:-

Let memtest run overnight.

Also, check the possibility of a temperature issue:-

If you get this far with no result, I would try swapping the PSU for a know good one.

Let us know how it goes.
