Getting the cannot display DNS error message at any website I try to get to. It appears that my connection is open because I use a router and my laptop works fine. Other programs (p2p stuff, virus updater, etc) that require net access also will not work. Not sure if this is an issue that can be helped with HijackThis, but the problem seemed to start happening after I used Ad-Aware for the first time in a long time, so I'm thinking spyware may be involved. If not any advice as to what the prob may be would be great, thanks in advance for any help! System specs are

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=61 ).

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner.
* Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'.
* Click 'Save report'.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = local.,
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D714A94F-123A-45CC-8F03-040BCAF82AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\SbCIe02a.dll
O9 - Extra button: SideStep - {3E230861-5C87-11D3-A1C6-00105A1B41B8} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\SbCIe02a.dll
O16 - DPF: {640B39C1-D713-464F-92C3-75BD972B95EE} - http://sidestep.com/get/k00719/sb02a.cab

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

regsvr32 /u occache.dll
attrib -r -s -h "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\"
rmdir "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\"
regsvr32 occache.dll
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it to run it.

Restart your computer. Post the logs for HijackThis and Ewido.

See if that fixes the internet connection problem. If not, try this out:

Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double click on WinsockFix.exe to run it.

Ok, did everything and still not getting a connection. Now the bottom bar of my explorer broser says "detecting proxy settings" for a little bit before bringing up "cannot be displayed" page. HJT log and ewido log posted below, these logs are from before I ran the delete.bat file you had me create and before I ran the winsock fix. Let me know If I need to run the scans again.

Thanks!

Download: StartDreck

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'Mark All'

UN-Check the 'NT-Services & NT-Kernel...' boxes only:
Press 'Ok'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread

Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/
1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled
2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete.
3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post.

Startdreck will not run on my pc, it freezes and goes to "not responding" whenever it tries to open. Because my computer doesn't connect to any sites, I have to use my laptop to download programs, than transfer to pc, startdreck DOES open on my laptop, so it's a problem with my pc, i think.

Here is the silentrunner log without running startdreck

Download Winsock2Fix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Download Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe

Run the Hoster program and select "Restore Orginal Hosts File"

Click START…RUN…Type in regedit. Make sure just “My Computer” is showing in the left pane and click..FILE….EXPORT…and save a copy some were in case you make a mistake. Now navigate to each of the following keys and delete the file/folder/entry I highlighted in RED.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\
{83B28A74-640D-48F4-9F51-E80EED7CC7E0}

Close regedit.

Can you run Startdreck in safe mode? If not try these tools...

Download WinPFInd http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/oldtimer/WinPFind.zip and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.

Download Track qoo http://www.geekstogo.com/downloads/Trackqoo.zip
Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop. Unzip the Track qoo.vbs inside to your desktop. DO NOT run it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.!

Inside C:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.! Once the Scan is Complete it will make a txt file (log) of what was found.

1. Go to the WinPFind folder
2. Locate WinPFind.txt
3. Please post those results in your next post!

REBOOT to normal mode.

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

So I need the following tool logs..

WinPFind.txt log
Track qoo.vbs log

Startdreck still wouldn't work in safe mode.

here are the two logs requested, thanks!

WinPFind

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Your logs are clean and this issue doesn't appear to be malware related. Since not only IE..but your antivirus, P2P..etc can't connect either then it's going to be a network issue. Try to disable the firewall to test and see if you can then connect.

Make your connection to the net...then open a command prompt and try pinging the site directly. Does it connect? If not..then check your network settings and DNS settings for the network.
