The problem I am having is that the computer just shuts down with no warning. Sometimes it happens when I am ripping DVD’s and others when downloading from the net and other times when it is just sitting there, it will power back up right away when I press the power button and I see nothing out of the ordinary on the machine or in windows. I ran memtest and it passed ok so I know it is not that i record all system spec when running like power/fans/voltage etc and none of them drop or do anything strange. I am stumped on this one. I also sweeped the computer for virus with Norton nothing and I have ewido and noadware for spyware so I don’t think it is that. If you need more info plz post. Here are the specs on my system:

Wow... I was just about to post a new thread to give update on my problem, since the old one got expired. I don't want to steal your thread, only tag along...

I have the exact same problem, which I have identified to only happen under continuous load. I am able to run the system practically indefinitely, if I raise the VCore and mem voltages a notch or two, and run underclocked to 2.25GHz. :sayno:

See these threads if you find anything interesting...
This is the original from last autumn:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=14310&page=1

This the one I wanted to update:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=64836

The update is that I have now upgraded my PSU and gfx-card, the current system is:
Case: Antec Sonata Piano
PSU: Antec True Power II 480W
Mobo: ASUS P4C800
CPU: P4 3.0 GHz (NW) @ 2.25GHz
GFX: ATI RADEON X800XL 256MB
Mem: 2 x Kingston 512MB PC3200 DDR400 CL2.5
HDD1: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 200GB SATA
HDD2: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB SATA
OPT1: LG DVD/CDRW
OPT2: LG CDRW 52x
Floppy: got one
Mon: Hyundai Imagequest L90D+ 19" TFT
USB1: Creative Wireless Desktop
USB2: Samsung ML-1710P

The upgrade from 380 TruePower and Radeon9500Pro brought no change to the problem. With normal clocks I usually get to the second or third tests on AquaMark or 3DMark05, and can compress about 1 minute of XVid before shutdown. With 2.25 I can get through the marks and seem to get no shutdown, but the system performance is far from what it could do.

Searsman: & grin

I would update your bios to version 1024( P4C800-E delux) / make sure you use the afusdos method (see manual) get the newest afudos off the asus website for your board and newest bios file 1024 ~~ it think

also use everest to post your system temps, cpu temps, system voltages
just these things please post the report after start-up & post another report after working the machine (run defrag and an anti virus scanner both at the same time / wait about 15 minutes then monitor your system temps, cpu temps, system voltages ~~ cut copy & paste should do fine)

also run memtest86 / to check your ram for problems / run one stick at a time & run the test for atleast a minimum of one hour per stick / download for free at memtest86.com

grin >>>> use this http://www.zdnet.de/downloads/prg/1/x/de011X-wc.html

post your results / grin ~~~ you will get the most individual attention if you post on your own (many of the more very talented guru techs in here wont give any effort to a combined post) /// your problems all though similar we get the responses confused ~~~ we are eager to help you though

ADDENDUM only use the bios files found for your board specific model number / use the latest and dont be afraid of beta bios files / they are almost as good as the final released version and fix many quirks / I personally have NEVER been boogered up by a beta bios / but if for some reason you dont like the new file / you can restore old version if you use afudos

How does the system compare when you are not overclocking ??????

Unfortunately your PSU is a low quality unit and on the small side of things to run that beast !! thats a lotta power hungry stuff !!

If I owned your system I would be looking for a 600 watt Enermax whisper quiet models (ebay)

your system voltages dont look bad though ?????? but it may get quirky when it really gets pushed ???

other than that / I dont see any suspects / unless you have been running windows for a year or more at which time it may just need a "clean" install of your OS ?????

dont hesitate to give more input as your trouble shoot your system / :4-dontkno

psu

See i was thinking it might be the psu cuz i had a crappy psu before and it would just shutdown all the time like this but then eventually it just died. It is strange cuz mine does not just shut off when there is a load i could be just using p2p overnight and it will shutdown or ripping a dvd or just sitting at the desktop it will die i never know when. the air coming out of the psu i hot and it seems that the fans just dont move much air i was thinking that is what is overheating i dunno. anyway since your post i have been looking at diff. psu's anyway i found the OCZ ModStream OCZ52012U 520W Power Supply that i kinda like. i like the fact that i can choose cables like on the ultra x are there any other psu's out there that are good and are set up like the ultra x ? thank you for your help on this.

Here are a few things you might want to try.....

Do you have Turbo mode enabled in your Bios? If so try turning it off.

If the PSU is suspect you could try the machine with a fewer drives connected. The 2 R/W drives and maybe the drive set that does not have the OS on them.

Is your water pump suckling off the PSU too?

It is interesting that you ran memtest for 8 hours without locking up yet when you run windows it locks. ???? Maybe you have a drive problem. Run the system Bare bones and try it for a while. If it is stable then start adding one thing at a time until it locks again.

OK yes i believe that i do have turbo mode on so i will try that first. Now the system was just shutting off like this before i had the water cooling system in there and yes it is on the psu also.

I will also try to eliminate things then add them one by one till it shuts down again.

I know it is strange how i can run the memtest or other boot up apps and nothing happens. it might also be something else maybe a software problem i am not sure what to think i was gonna try to use another drive i have that has windows xp on it and see if it shuts down but it is ide and only one drive, not like the raptors in sata raid for a while i thought that maybe the northbridge is overheating cuz i have the x800 and 2 sata raptors running on it but i am not sure if that could cause something like this.

See what happened is i had a diff setup before and the mb and cpu fried so i had to send my board to asus for a replacment one and buy a new chip when i did that i went crazy and upgraded the gfx card the case the psu and the drives so its not like i added something and now this is happening. the best thing i can do is try a diff drive, less drives, the turbo thing and see what happens i guess.

One other thing is that the air coming out of my psu is very hot i think maybe it is overheating and just shutting down cuz i have a very power hungry box. i am going nuts i rip dvd alot and i keep wasting them cuz the machine shuts down during the write or the reading of the disc so i gotta start all over.

one more thing is that when i play games like raven shield, swat 4, hl2 or anything i can plzy without the machine shutting down its very strange i am completely lost here. thanks again.

The OCZ is a kick butt PSU no doubt about that. I personally would go for a 600 watt Enermax / there about $145.00 on ebay / that is very clean power
(modular PSU >>> Antec SP model)
http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/psus/index.x?pg=1

PSU's can not take heat / I would try taking the side off the computer and running a house fan blowing into it.

You have a water cooler ~~ you still have atleast 2 @ 120mm fans blowing air out of the case right or 4 @ 80mm case fans exausting air out of the case ~~~ dont you ?????

I have one 120mm on the rad blowing air in then another 120mm in the front blowing air in also and it all exhausts out throught the side of the case and through the psu. The fans in the psu do not seem very fast maybe that is why it is getting hot.

I already tried taking the side of the case off and pointing a fan inside but it made no diff. i was thinking of trying to take out the psu and put better/faster fans inside to see if it makes a diff at all, since i plan on getting a new psu anyway.

I like the OCZ one because you can remove the cables also it looks better lol that may sound strange but the inside of my case kinda looks sweet with all the crap i got in there so i dont want a bunch of loose wires hanging around but i have never heard any thing bad about enermax so that is deff a plus.

Update

Here is the update first i bought a cooler master northbridge cooler here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835103169, hooked up that bad boy. Turned off the turbo mode and set it to auto in the bios and took out the x-connect psu and installed some different fans taking air from the outside of the case to the inside instead of the original set up of air from inside to outside, also removed the fancy looking screen and grill they use to increase airflow and the system hads not shut down since.

I think that the biggest improvment was the northbridge cooler. The temps run alot cooler now on the chip. I think that with the two sata raptor drives in raid the other two maxtor sata drives transfering alot of data, the x800 gfx card and the sound all running was causing it to overheat and shut down to prevent damage. anyway it has been running nice and smooth since the change just to let you all know.

thanks again for everyones help on this subject

Nice job on upgrading and solving your heat problems :sayyes: Thanks for posting back with your solutions as it may help others.

This is a bit of a surprise, you are blowing the hot air into the case? You may want to switch this fan around and blow out.
Generally speaking, in most cases(pun intended) the overall airflow of your case should be from front to back(better for noise and PSU is already blowing out) and bottom to top(heat flow). Any deviation from this flow will impede cooling and raise temps and noise. I feel it is better to have equal(or similar) amounts of air incoming and outgoing. There are many discussions on whether negative pressure(more blowing out) or positive case pressure(more blowing in) is better, but, IMHO, there should not be extremes(like ALL blowing in or out). I prefer a slight positive pressure, as that allows me to control where all the air enters and allows me to install filters to help with dust control. Any unsealed openings in the case would then have air being forced out. Larger, slower fans are prefered for their low noise level over smaller, faster fans. Larger fans can also be turned up in speed when ultra-high performance is desired and high heat generation is experienced.
For your case, I would suggest the front and side fan blow in, and the radiator and PSU fan blow out. You can alter the speeds and sizes to get the balanced(positive?) case pressure and noise levels desired.

I have the exact same problem, which I have identified to only happen under continuous load. I am able to run the system practically indefinitely, if I raise the VCore and mem voltages a notch or two, and run underclocked to 2.25GHz. :sayno:

...

I'd like to bring this to closure here... I was assisted by many helpful people (linderman, clintfan, dai etc.) in a few threads about my problem. It was hard to swallow, that when getting the board switched at ASUS in the first place, they would send me another faulty P4C800. But now, 17 months aftery buying the damn thing, I finally have a 3GHz computer... As the socket478 mobos seem to be harder and harder to buy, I went and bought an ASUS P4P800SE, wanting to just swap it with my P4C800. By the specs, it's not quite as good but I had to see what happens. Of course only after the purchase I found out about the problems people have with their Maxtor SATA drives and the ICH5R on the board... But today I fetched it, out with the old - in with the new. I connected all peripherals and powered it up. Got to BIOS, saw both my Maxtor SATA drives (DiamondMax Plus9 200G and MaxlineII 250G (btw. warranty changed after two broken DiamondMax Plus9 160G's in nine months...)), set some options and off it went to boot XP. It found all the other drivers, but the network controller needed the cd to be shown so the switch was such a breeze I couldn't believe it. The outcome:
- it's quite a bit faster due to the cpu clock and the bus speed (266->400)
- I can actually run any software as long as I like and I don't have to have either vsync on or framerate capped in every game
- it's cooler - after aquamark and 3dmark run one after the other, the cpu was at 44C and now it's at 33C, before it was at about 55C in load and 36C in idle. And I didn't even replace the thermal goo between the standard sink and the cpu. Being able to lower the VCore to standard makes a difference.
- and when it's cooler it's more silent

So just about everything around the mobo had been replaced and it was the mobo after all even after the warranty change. Now I'm more than happy but yet a bit frustrated at ASUS about the headache. I have to go run a few more benchmarks just to not realize I didn't need the extra beef anyway. :D
