Hi there,
i was searching this forum for USB56 and found some related threads
for my problem. Although as usual not exactly the same.

Problem:
Since i was building my new rig for over one year i never experienced any problems with my front usb sockets.
My case i a Chieftec Midi BX-03B-BB and i use those two front sockets for:
A) Typhoon 16 in 1 card reader
B) Sandisc and some no-name memory sticks
C) Minolta Dynax 5D digital SLR camera
D) all sorts of Digital cameras

and all devices are working flawlessly

I just got a external HD Maxtor OneTouch II 200GB on USB and i can not get the system properly recognize this device.
It somehowe detects the drive but i will get a error "unknown device" and can not see it within the device manager etc.

On the USB ports on the back there is no problem.
I have checked the wiring on

http://www.chieftec.de/?page=faq&language=de&id=2#pin

and disconnected for a trial pin 5 which is connected to a purple wire
but this does not cure the situation. Still no go with my Maxtor HD and totaly go with my other USB devices.

I also tested it on a second bootable HD with SP2 and the newest chipset drivers which was making no difference. I also hocked up the Maxtor OneTouch II on two different pc's which recognized it properly.
Perhaps BIOS od jumper settings to check???

Any advices for further checks are highly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi there,
i just got a answer from Maxtor Europe, that the Maxtor OneTouch II is NOT a Maxtor product :3angry1: and therefore i can not receive any help or even a decent handwritten answer from them!
As usaual with those big companys! Selling products for million's of Sfr or $
but do not care about theyr customers, and feed them up with standard answers.

Lucky to have a techsupport forum!

So anyone had a go on it????

Hi there,
the problem is still persisting but somehow i can live with it!

Q:
Does anyone know something about the jumper settings just besides
the USB 56 pins?
I can not find any descriptions of it within the manual!

Thanks for yout answers!

Hello, you will need to look on page 2-30 in the mobo manual for the usb pin out and match that up to the pin out from your case manual....it is very easy to mis wire these headers.....worst case senario is to install the extra 4 usb port header that came with the mobo and velcro a unpowered usb hub to the top of the case for convenience.

According to my initial post this is already carried out!
I am talking about the jumpers and its settings, which are just next to the USB 56 pins on the mobo.

Just out of curiosity...in your bios for the mobo is the Advanced settings/ usb controllrs set up properly ? Legacy usb should be disabled if you are running XP, the USB 2.0 should be set for Hi-speed.....and if you leave the Maxtor Onetouch installed while in the bios it should also show USB Mass Storage Configuration with a few additional menus, which should be left at default or Auto. And you may want to update to XP Sp2 to have support with XP for drives larger than 137Gb, though I do believe there is a patch for Sp1 that will allow XP to recognize a HD larger than 137Gb.

Hi twajetmech,
my BIOS settings are:
Legacy USB: AUTO
USB 2.0 Cotroller: ACTIVE
USB 2.0 Mode: HISPEED

Any idea, if this setting is interferring just the onboard USB 56 and 78?
All USB's on the rear of the case working ok!

Thanks!

Hi twajetmech,
ok progress only regarding the Joystick problem i suffered from the beginning of my installation!
Regarding the Maxtor OneTouch as i mentioned in my initial post,
there is ONLY a problem on the front USB's of my case.
I reformatet div. times on the rear USB's and o other pc's because first i tought of a faulty Maxtor.
The problem is still here: After plug in into the front USB's i will get a message that the driver could not be installed properly. Strange because
the driver is installed otherwise i would get the same pop up message also on the rear USB's.
In this case i can not see the drive within the explorer and the internal XP function where i can see all my hd's and also reformat and assign them to a new drive letter! (dont know how to call it in english because i have a german XP)
When i plug it in into the rear USB's i can see it in both applications.
A nice one without any logic behind (at least for me).
I can only think of a shielding or ground problem between the mobo, the wiring harness and the front sockets.

this could possibly be a problem with the front inputs being some sort of USB hub...dunno..but I do know that when I originally installed my WD external drive it totally freaked out when being run through a hub, but it works just fine now that I've connected it directly to the case's inputs as opposed to the hub... :4-dontkno

I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point, while there have been reports of front mounted usb problems due to tatic and bad southbridge chips the P4C800-E Dlx has not suffered from that delima to my knowledge. It could very well be a bad wiring job of the case header, its hard to say. I would suggest you email Maxtor USA for international support, maybe they could help. let me know how it goes.

Hi there,
just reporting in that Maxtor USA (or wherever) replied to my support mail :sayyes: :sayyes: :sayyes: !!!!

We mailed forth an back but at the end the tech was also at his "dead end" and advised to try a powered USB hub. Since this problem is only on the front USB's i can live with it. I have now constantly connected the ext. Maxtor HD on one of the rear USB's.
No solution BUT a workaround!

I have a 20gb Ipod that I connect to the 56, 78 USB ports on my P4C800-D. You may think that the Ipod is not an external USB Hard Disk so what maddness is this? But infact it is, in Windows Explorer it shows up as just another drive. So I know that these headers for the front USB connections work with external drives.

I do not have a solution to your immediate problem but I thought it worth mentioning because it may eliminate some suspicion of the 56 and 78 USB headers thus leaving the issue with the drive or the case connections.

Thanks Barry-R,
but read my first post and you will see, that i do nat have any problems with all USB devices i ever connected to the front USB EXCEPT my Maxtor HD.
So, my thinking goes to either:
1. Maxtor internal problem with pcb and / or hardware desing
2. Maxtor problem with driver coding
