I have a cutome built computer that has been running perfect for the last 2 years. components

mobo.. asus p4c800 deluxe
video... ati radeon 9800 pro
hdd.. 2 segate barracudas 80gb in raid 0
power... antec 480watt
cpu.. intel p4 2.8 prescott

It was working fine yesterday and now this morning it wont display anything to my monitor. I tested the monitor with my old computer and that works, and I also tried a new video card. Today I put on my headphones and a lady voice can across saying "cpu startup test failed" Does that mean that my p4 is dead or the mobo of the power suppply. I read on the tec support forums about clearing the cmoss so I did that but still no dice. How can it work one day and then nothing the next. Can someone point me in the right direction as to my next step?

I have Very Similar Components,

And linderman said try a new PSU, but that motherboard i have known to be frigidity at even the most unsuspected of times, Did you custem build it yourself or did you buy the parts and give it to a friend etc., anyway, try removing The CPU and look at the socket(478 if im correct) The handle for the CPU and the component that works with the cpu have fudged up on myn under the CPU, look at that and see if any of the pins have turned discolored unlike the other pins, If its dust blow it off with the air compressor thingers, also try checking your RAM, what are you running for RAM?

You might have bumped your tower accidently and knocked somin loose?!?!?!?

check those and give a reply,

Your Feller Prudhoc1

hey guys sorry its been a couple of days. I had to take a vacation from trying to fix this machine cause it was driving me crazy. I have 2 sticks of 1gb corsair. they are vs1gb400c3 the value select corsair. whats wierd is that I am typing to you on my old computer. A 600mh pentium II. on a 64 mb video card running win 98 se. Its amazing that this thing still turns onn and yet the good computer wont produce anything to the monitor. I tried switching out the ram but still doesent work. I did clear the cmoss witht the power cord out to answer your question. I tried reseating the heatsink and cleaned off the dust. there doesnt seem to be a lot of the thermal gel left between the heatsink and the processor anymore, but them I havent changed any hardware since 2004. Is it worth buying a new power supply or a new processor for the board?

thanks
eric

I would get the PSU, S478 is ancent now and the price to buy one you may as well get a better PC for a couple more bucks, if you wanted a good CPU that is, not some celeron 2.0(had 1 and it suck absolute hell) Try PSU and if that dont work consider your options.

Bad PSU can still run all the fans, even the ones connected to the motherboard. They're definitely not all-or-nothing units as you describe. Do test out a different one as linderman suggested.

i just wanted to say thanks to all you guys for the advise. I tried a new psu and it still didnt display anything to the monitor and still that lovely woman's voice came throught the speakers saying cpu startup failed. oh well, maybe somebody on ebay might want some of my parts. I am not sure how much money I should keep spending on this machine to get it going

replacement parts off ebay shouldnt be that much if you wanted to keep using that computer. Though if it ends up costing more then 150.00 or so, id say just save up alil and buy a new system. You already have a psu for it :)

once you try another psu / then next in line is the motherboard

S478 is hard to find for a reasonable price / look on mwave.com / click on refurbished / then click on motherboards often times they have mobo's for under $40.00

hey linderman, i looked the internet far and wide and cannot find a replacement. ones that I found dont have raid or are pci express instead of agp. Does asus still fix this board if I sent it to them? For a price I would assume right?

i highly doubt asus will fix that board even if you wanted to pay them

you can still find those boards on ebay

or get a board that doesnt have raid / then get a primise brand raid controller card thats no biggie
