the first board i used EZflash, i jsut copied the .ROM file, and it worked. but with this board no good at all. the whole ALT+F2 busines, and i did rename the file to P4c800.ROM

yes the XP boot disk works on this computer.. as does the WD diagnostics tool disk i tried with the new one

also, i've tried two other floppy drives...one with my old board another with my new board...

i'm sure they sent me a new board because the serial is different..

ur right I am going out of my mind.. but in a way i'm kinda used to it.. spending hours and hours in lab debugging circuits etc..

I really want to get this up and running before school starts next monday~
but i'm going home, in Fremont.. so i can go to frys and get a new mobo and new ram.. and see what happens... and maybe go to Asus headquarters and yell at them

All right, OK. Sounds like we're beating a dead horse here with this mobo. It is sooooo sad. It's probably something like a bad Northbridge chip or something. Hate to give up, but it seems like we've tried everything except the dreaded reset-the-CMOS. If you're dumping the mobo anyway, that won't hurt.

You know, I liked the MSI "875P-Neo-FIS2R" as my second choice mobo. I almost bought that one, right down to the wire. Nobody here seems to be complaining about that board. Maybe it's because nobody's using them, but it could also be because they're working OK.

I'll definitely count myself lucky with this Asus-- me and one other person so far who's responded to my "WORKING" thread. Are ALL mobo's like this? I think not, I just picked one where you're lucky if you get a good one.

Sounds like you're still working with your original set of pieces, and didn't blow too much more cash doing this debug. I think Fry's had both mobo's in store last time I looked, at prices amazingly comparable to or below the going web prices. They didn't used to have them, it's recent. If you got the mobo there, maybe you can do a defective return and try again or maybe refund & try that MSI instead. With a working mobo you should be able to set up that O/S on SATA, as you wanted, and as I tested last night.

Sorry we couldn't get this thing going, it does really seem hosed. Good luck. If you still want to bounce ideas, I'll be around here.

IN FREMONT!
sigh...two defective mobos with the same problem... what are the chances of that...
I really hope its not the mobo that is the problem...
otherwise i dunno if Asus will accept a second RMA..
I did not get my first board from frys but online from ComputerBrain (do not order anything from them)... and they only accept 7 day returns...

oh well we'll see, fry's first thing tomorrow morning!!

~thanks again clintfan

Only 7 days? That's cold! I made sure all to check return policy first on the webplaces I bought from: both were 30 days but one wouldn't take returns on certain types of items, so I bought those from the other place. Expect a 15-day return policy if you buy the next mobo at Frys, with receipt, original box with manuals and all the other little stuff.

And for heaven's sake don't forget to pull your CPU and RAM and seal them in a leftover antistatic bag or something.

Your RAM ought to be good enough. Why don't you keep that, and everything else you had, and just swap the mobo, for same model or different mfg. You need to get one that can handle your 3.0GHz CPU.

The only downside of the MSI 875P-Neo-FIS2R was its Northbridge heatsink arrangement. We can talk more about that if you decide to get this board, it's really no big deal. Architecturally this MSI is identical to your Asus, except it supports 3 firewire ports instead of Asus' 2.

Good luck, and let us know what you got.

Great news! Check ALL the features, make sure all the h/w works. Put that chipset thing on first, then the rest of the drivers. Can't tell you what to do about the old mobo. Great news, though. Made my day.

I don't quite understand what you did with the RMA, but I'm glad you ended up with a working system. Sure, by all means, add yours to the WORKING thread. I'd appreciate it.
