Hi

After a system failure I have had to replace my motherboard. At the same time I have replaced my CPU heatsink and fan with what is reportedly a better quality fan and cooling system. http://tinyurl.com/43rnn4

When I first installed it the CPU temp was idling at 70C (reported by speedfan) so I removed everything, took the m/board out of the case and replaced the thermal compound with a slightly thicker layer (I noticed that there was virtually no residue on the heatsink - just on the processor) and reinstalled the heatsink before replacing the m/board so I could be sure it was properly seated.

Since reinstalling the fan my CPU is now idling at 55C and increases to around 74C with full CPU load. I should add that this is with the side panel off.

Unfortunately I don't know what my system temps were before installing the new fan so I have nothing to compare these figures to.

I'm using a decent quality Zalman thermal paste http://www.ebuyer.com/product/125310, which according to their data sheet and reviews has a run in time of around 7 days during which time I should see a further temp drop of 3-5C.

This still sounds like it's awfully hot though. Is this a big problem?

The processor is a P4 550 3.4GHz socket 775

Thanks in advance
