I'm sorry if this is the wrong topic area but it seemed to fit the question best (damn newbies eh!)

I am a University student studying at the University of Edinburgh. I didn't have a problem with the computers that are provided at my accomodation prior to Christmas but since I have come back they have introduced restrictions to the computers. "This operation has been cancelled due to restrcitions in effect on this computer. You may need to contact your administrator. You may not have sufficient privelages to access this area." Or words to that effect.

Now if I could enter the control panel I could probably do something about this but having found a hidden link for it it comes up with the above message again. Is there any way around this? (Previously I set up a new user with password at setup but this was through the control panel).

Basically I want to download some software for the computer. I have reset Internet Explorer defaults on this one computer (there are 6) but when I try to download it comes up with the dreaded above message and says that IE can not download program x or y.

I have tried setting a document on notepad as REGEDIT but when I then close it and double click on it I get the restrictions mesage. I would be forever grateful if someone knows a way around this.

I suspect that would be against the rules here, your only option is to approach your admin and explain the situation, but they do these things for the greater good of the uni and it's students, not the answer you want I'm afraid but it's the only one you will get from reputable boards, I'm not suggesting you want to do bad things, just that we can't help people overcome security measures placed by senior staff or actual owners of these PC's, sorry.

Sorry chum, this comes under the heading of hacking and is in contradiction of our rules. Your best bet would be to contact the guys running your network and persuade them that they are not doing you any favours by limiting your research

Welcome to TSF, FlatSeasonLover. I'm citing from our Forum Rules:
We will not assist any user who, in our opinion, is clearly trying to circumvent his company network protocols or restrictions put on his system by a Network Administrator. Again we have no ability to assess the user's intent.

ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

Users may not post hacks, cracks, or give instruction how to pirate any type of software, or anything similar, in any forum of TSF. We do not condone, support or give instruction on any illegal activity pertaining to computer systems, computer hardware, computer software programs or computer related activities. Included in this group of activities are requests for help to circumvent system admin passwords or Administrator settings on networks. We do understand that the majority of requests may be legitimate, but we do not have the means to discern these from non-legitimate requests.
Follow the solid advice already provided above, and talk to the Admins in your University. Thread closed.
