I am making this post for a piece of mind. For a year now I've been using my laptop daily, resting it on my bed. It was only until it was too late that I was told I shouldn't do this. Last night, my laptop randomly shut down with no warning. On trying to power it back up, it would just shut back down again. I left it for a while and the machine is working now but I want to know for sure if it's properly working. If I'm still under threat.

I am now resting the laptop on a book (a hard surface), as opposed to just laying it on my bed.

Do I need to worry further?

The internal air channels may be getting clogged with dust, etc. See if you can blow it out with a can of compressed air (available at most dept stores and any computer/electronics store).

Using the laptop on a bed pretty much completely blocks any airflow from reaching the underside where it is needed. Using the laptop elevated allows fresh air to reach the underside.
