Hello, I have a question regarding the different versions of Intel's Core i7 processor. (specifically the 920 and the 940)

Obviously the 965 is the best of the 3, but it's just too expensive, so we'll ignore it. The 920 is stock clocked at 2.66GHz, and the 940 at 2.93GHz. Also, the 940 can handle 1600 RAM while the 920 can only handle 1333 RAM. That seems to be all you get, which IMO isn't a lot for the 940 being twice the price of the 920. Is there anything I don't understand? Does the 940 overclock much better than the 920? I just don't see the justification for doubling the cost for such little gain...

Any thoughts?

You have about summed it up> Entry Level, Performance Class, Extreme Edition Intel has been pricing chips like that for a long time. There is not a lot difference between the 920 and the 940 just speed.
But how much speed exactly? For example, if I have two nearly identical PC's, one with a 920 and 1333 RAM, and the other with a 940 and 1600 RAM, will it be like night and day figuring out which one has what processor? Or will it be more subtle and I'll have to break out a stopwatch and run tests?

Get out the stopwatch, on intense apps you'll notice a difference normal usage not so much.
As wrench97 said, get out the stopwatch because you'll never see the difference.
Well then I guess I don't understand why anyone would want to pay twice as much for what is basically a 920 with a teeny bit of overclocking already done.

ence. i7 is still overpriced and the MOBO's still have some issues.
Really? I think the 920 is priced fairly. I can pick up one from microcenter for $230 which makes it at least $50 cheaper than the motherboard I plan on purchasing.
