Operating system not found

Hi,

I have encountered a problem with my relatively new laptop. It's a sony vaio and it runs on windows 7 (not too sure if that makes any difference) It was bought last july and a couple of days ago, while i was on it, it restarted itself and then came up with a black screen that reads 'operating system not found'.

I also can't access the BIOS as everytime I press any keys on the keyboard it repeats the same message over and over. I took it back to the store, as I assumed it would still be under warranty, but apparently it's a 'software fault' so it isn't. I was told to use the recovery discs and was told the steps I could take to recover the data on my hard drive. However, when I try to recover my data it says that it cannot detect the internal hard drive and when I try the complete restore option it says that my C drive is too small.

So I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how this can be fixed? Or if this sounds like a software problem?

I appreciate any advice that can be given

It possible that the hard drive has failed and this would be a hardware problem.

You can try running the manufacturer diagnostics on the hard drive.

i'll see if that works.
thanks for the help
I could be way off, but could be that the hard drive came loose some how and its not making a good connection to the motherboard.

Has the laptop been dropped recently? Doesn't hurt to check that there's a good connection.

It could also be that the hard drive has in fact failed. Not always, but usually the hard drive would show some kind of early warning signs that its beginning to fail.
