I do alot of file editing. When I click on a file ie a dat file my computer just hangs for a very long time. The mouse pointer disappears and no less than 5 minutes later a menu pops up to let me open with the appropriate note pad or what ever.

If I click on a winrar file to see whats inside, again my computer will go into somekind of lock out mode for not less than 5 minutes while it figures out how to open this file and then bang the winrar file is opened. There was a time this was instant.

When you click on a file or right click and choose "open with" it shouldnt take 5 minutes of computing for this action to take place.

where is it bogging down? My "open with" menu does seem to have alot of unnessesary programs in it like tax wiz or movie viewers. My PC seems to function OK otherwise.

My system

1 GHz AMD 512mb SDRAM
30 Gb HD about 18mb used
logitech 3 btn usb mouse
Gfx video Ti200
Via integrated audio on a KT 133 MB

I've seen this beefore with my brother's PC. (he is also running ME)

How much space do you have on your hard drive? Check to see if your virtual memory is set correctly for the amount of physical memory you have. (1.5 times more virtual memory recommended)

This resolved the problem that my brother was having, hope this helps you.

If you have 512mb of physical memory (RAM) I would set the intial size to 768mb and the maximum size to 1536mb. It seems like you have enough free space on your hard drive to do this.

SOLVED!!!

Well accidently solved. It was my winrar. WINRAR was corrupt. I used it all the time to unzip ok. But I noticed when I went to zip a file I was getting an error. I rarely zip so I didnt notice.

I uninstalled winrar. And installed Winzip, and noticed i was getting NO delay when right clicking or "send to" ing a file.

I suppose when windows would sift through all the extensions it has to open a file, like notepad, etc. it would get to winrar and snag.

This is a good one to remember.

Hi people
mmmmm

Ive noticed a similur problem -like when a simple text file
got the attributes set to hidden, somehow without my connsent.

I just changed back to normal , and the open text didnt stall..
Some thing to do with windows thinking theres a whole lotta
stuff in there or to much to put in memory .

Can someone explain this more prosicesly--in simple terms??
