I just upgraded fro m XP to 7. I would like to increase available disk space. Is it OK to uninstall older Java run time environments and / or updates, keeping only the latest of each? Failing that, how about getting rid of the all and reinstalling current Java?

You can (and it is reccomended) to uninstall all of the older Java run time environments. I think you just go to Programs and Features and delete all of the old versions.
Yes, as Smael said, uninstall old versions of Java and you can download the latest version here. I have it removed completely and don't even use it on my computer.
Why would there be old Java drivers on a new install. I am under the understanding that XP cannot upgrade directly to Windows 7.0.
I upgraded using Laplink software that reinstalls all programs, files and settings. Works great by the way.

Wow, Laplink! I haven't heard that mentioned in a while. I think I have a Laplink cable in an old box next to my Sony Walkman.... Sorry, just reminiscing
