Old HD Into New PC

Hello! Sorry if I sound illiterate, I am a beginner on this HD stuff. Here's what I want to do:

Take the old HD from my Compaq Presario SR1710NX and put it into my new eMachines ET1331G-03W

Is this possible? A few questions as well:

1. Would I need a new PSU to add this in?
2. Will I be able to use the old data (music, pictures, etc) and copy it to the new?

I have no idea on how to install it but I can read tutorials. Thanks for the help!

You may need to take ownership of the drive, what OS on the old and what on the new?

What exactly do you mean by I need to take ownership of the drive?

Old PC is on Windows XP SP2, new on 7. :)

Permissions on the old drive will be set for different users, you will need to take ownership or the security settings will not allow you access some of the files.
Ah, that's what you meant but I'm confused. That's to grant permission on Windows 7, not Windows XP. Is there a permission feature on Windows XP? If so, my old computer is broken (brother messed with some strings on the PSU, though HD is fine) so I can't do anything about permissions on Windows XP. Are you saying that it's possible to insert my old HD into my new pc, but afterward I'd have to grant permission?

Let me rephrase my question: Can I physically move my old hard drive from an old computer (Windows XP) into my new PC (Windows 7) from the types of computer that I've linked?
You should be able to, assuming they are using the same interface, look at the drives and see. It's possible your new machine will support both IDE and SATA, only way to physically be sure is to look at them. After you insert the drive into the Win7 box, you may need to take ownership and set permissions for your Windows 7 account on the other HD.
are you wanting to boot to the operating system on it or do you want to use it as a second storage drive.

Alright thanks, I'll look into it a bit further.

I want to use it as a second storage drive, assuming this option gives me the choice of accessing my old files?
