OEM OS Installation

I bought this new hard drive, fdisked it, partition and format it. With my Computer manufacturers recovery disk and application disk, I tried to install Win98. After its completed and reboot, it automatically goes to the Start up menu where safe mode and other functions are. No. #1 is highlighted ( Normal ). So I press enter, and then i quickly see the windows logo and it goes right back to that menu again, only it freezes. This goes on and on. Can someone who is OEM oriented, tell me why I can't get this done the so called normal way? I'm useing the same computer, that those disks were part of originally. The only difference is, I'm useing a larger hd, which is verified by my new controller card.

Yes, the Bios sees my new hard drive and the computer is a Sony, way past the warranty period.

New HD is too big. Bios may "see" it but it wont support it.

We don't know how big his hard drive is now do we!

And he did say that the bios recognized the hard drive. Whether or not it recognizes the full size of the drive he didn't say.

You say you installed a new controller card with the hard drive.

If this is so the restore programs that came with your computer will not recognize this and it may be the cause of the whole issue your having.

Boothbay! What is the model number of your Sony Computer?

And what brand and what size is the hard drive, Give us some info dude.........

And does the bios see the full size of the drive?
To interject - since you're rebuilding this machine - I would suggest:

Fdisking (blow away the partitions and redo.)
Formatting the drive.
Getting into the CD in DOS mode.
Getting into the CAB files and copying them into C:\CABS
Running the Windows install from C:\CABS\Setup.

This will leave off all the trash that your OEM wants to install and give you a "pure" windows install.

Then you can add "trash" at your leisure! :D
...no we dont know the HD size but...

It is a real problem if it is too big...question is it a new hard drive or the one that came with the machine...new drive...go to sony site and see if thier is a flash for the BIOS...then make sure it the MOBO and ide cable are ATA compatable...if not youll have no luck...if it is the origanl drive then disregaurd this and slim_jims posts and listen to speed

The HD is a 80gig Maxtor and its new. The Bios of the controller card sees it at boot up....76897 or something like that. But when Maxtor tech made me do a Fdisk on it, I was told only this morning that the Fdisk on my startup disk of win98 is limited and I should go to MSKB and download another file that would at least make me see 64gigs. Naturally, they gave me the wrong info. Now someone there gave me another url to download an updated Fdisk. In the meantime, with the old Fdisk, it read only 10658, and I get a message that no more space to add anything. Hopefully this new download would take care of that.

Are you going to try and load this machine with the restore disk?

Or are you going to do a clean install of Win.98.

You can get Windows startup disks here
Fdisk Fiasco

I was told that there are 35 tech's support in Maxtor, and i must of gotten the 35th one late last night. Turned out that he knew what he was talking about. He told me to make another start up floppy from my installed Win98. I did and sure enough, for the first time my new hd was able to see all and partitioned the way I wanted to. Now, why didn't the other 34 tell me that weeks ago? But as one problem gets solved, another pops up. After formating my drives, I did a clean install of Win98. The i started to add my periphials and their drivers. Sure enough, after installing the drivers of my controller card, I can't get into windows...it freezes. I removed the drivers, not the card..I need it to 'see' my 80gig HD.
and then I am able to get into windows. I suspect, that this being a Sony computer, they must of done something to make sure only their OEM OS would work just fine. The reason i suspec this, is because, I have it on my old HD, added those drivers and don't have a problem getting into Windows. Also, the modem, printers and my cdrw work just fine with that old hd, but I'm having a hell of a time, getting to make my modem, and etc to work on the new drive. Go figure.

You may need to download the newest drivers for these peripherals and update the drivers in device manager...
