Karmal, Repairing an xp system that won't boot!!!
You will need your windows xp cd!!

Make sure your bios has boot to cd first then insert your win xp cd in the drive and start computer.

Let it load until it gets to the screen that says windows xp pro setup --- welcome to setup
Here, there will be 3 options to setup xp, to repair xp, and to quit setup, you want to press r to use recovery console.

Once recovery console starts it will ask you which windows installation would you like to log into it, is normally 1 but they will be listed choose the appropriate number then it will ask you for an administrator password here you usually can just click enter (if you have a password you may have to put it in).

That should take you to a prompt that looks like this C:\WINDOWS>

At the prompt here you will type three commands after typing in each one click enter
ATTRIB -H C:\\BOOT.INI enter
ATTRIB -R C:\\BOOT.INI enter
ATTRIB -S C:\\BOOT>INI enter

Then at the prompt type DEL BOOT.INI and click enter

At the next prompt type BOOTCFG /REBUILD

It will then do a few operations on the screen and ask add installation boot list which you will put in the letter y, underneath that it will ask you to enter load identifier, this is simply the name of you xp operating system, on mine I would type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition yours may differ.
Next it asks you to enter os load options---here type in /fastdect

On my computer this is the way the last step would look
Add installation to booy list? <Yes/No/All>: y
Enter Load Identifier: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (whatever your is).
Enter OS Load Options: /fastdetect and then I would click enter

The next step is to type in at the prompt CHKDSK /R/F then press enter this may take in excess of 30 minutes. (There is a space between CHKDSK and /r/F none between /R/F).

When it is finished and you are at the prompt again type this FIXBOOT and press enter
It will ask are you sure you want to write a new boot sector to the partition just type y and press enter.

When you get to the next prompt just type exit, click enter and reboot your computer.

Hi Karmal

You will need the XP CD for this.

Follow these instructions that were posted above:
Make sure your bios has boot to cd first then insert your win xp cd in the drive and start computer.

Let it load until it gets to the screen that says windows xp pro setup --- welcome to setup
Here, there will be 3 options to setup xp, to repair xp, and to quit setup, you want to press r to use recovery console.
Then rather than the BOOT.INI commands, you should type in:
copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

(or replace e: with the letter of the CD drive)

Then type exit to restart. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

If not, boot back into the recovery console as above, but at the C:>Windows prompt, type in chkdsk /p /r with the gaps as shown.
