Novell client 4.9 SP2 and Windows XP Pro

6171 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  seth_turner_04
Our lab at school is running Novell 5.0. Three years ago we set up 25 new machines with Windows XP Pro using Novell's client 4.9 sp2. Unfortunately no one wrote down the directions for making this client work with windows xp pro. Recently we have received several donated machines with xp pro on them and I need to get them to connect to the Novell 5.0 server. Does anyone know how to do this?

Probably someone at Novell, not much call for Netware expertise nowadays.
Good old Novell, pity we ditched it just over a year ago

The install for Novell Client can be found here, from there it's simply a case of clicking next (default options should be fine)
After Windows reboots you'll be greeted with the standard Novell Login prompt

Just download the client and install it. You can set the tree, server and context once you have the client installed.
Thank you. I guess I had forgotten that the setup file was setupnw.exe. We are waiting to hear about a grant and then we are switching to Microsoft server. We've used Novell for the past 12 years and it has been very stable for us.
Why switch to windows if netware has worked for you for years. I will never understand that. My father-in-law did the same thing and now he reboots his 2000 server on a regular basis. He very rarely had to reboot his netware server. Of course I am biased. I learned Netware and worked on Netware before I ever touched a Windows Server. I still like Netware better for User Management, File Serving, and application deployment.
Not my choice. This is a decision the administration and their consultants have made. We have run Netware since 1995 with very few problems.

I installed and ran the client, then went to the properties of the client for Netware and set the tree, server, context. The login dialog box comes up but when I check the advanced tab no tree, server or context are listed. What have I forgotten to do?

Has our administration been talking to your administration?

I've seen this before, and in our case it was to do with students installing Novell Client before installing the network card driver, so based on that perhaps check to see whether the PC can still access the network, has it got an IP address, able to connect to the net, (is the NIC driver installed) that kind of thing
Try typing in the IP of the Novell server in the Tree field. Sometimes our tree will not pop up also. We just type in the IP address for the buildings server, then it finds the user contexts and servers.

I haven't had any experience with configuring Novell server since thats my bosses job and I'm just the peon :). We also run Novell 6.5 so I don't know what all is different either.
