notebook display dim

i have a compaq presario M2001AL notebook suddenly while working the display became absolutely dim . i can barely see the display.But the notebook is working fine.Is it a backlight problem or inverter problem.Also what is the cost of backlight & inverter.

If you shine a light directly at it can you see it?

It sounds like just the flourescent tube has died. The cost can vary depending on the machine it's going into. Try www.ebay.com to get an idea.

yes i am able to see it if i shine a light on directly the screen.

Then I'd say the tube has died. I can't access eBay at work but that's an excellent place to start looking as I had mentioned before. Until then you can plug in an external LCD or CRT to use the laptop.
