Hello,

I have been using Norton Antivirus 2002 with XP for quite some time now and never ebfore ahs it given me trouble. Recently, I moved into a new apartment and we got Verizon DSL as our ISP. My roommate and I split the connection with a hub. The net works fine, but ever since I hooked up to the hub and DSL my Norton takes forever to startup upon booting. When I boot my PC for the first time XP boots, then Norton hangs and my harddrive runs like crazy for about a minute and a half, it then checks the floppy drive for disks, and finally the little norton icon appears in my system tray and all my desktop icons refresh. Only then can I access my start menu.

Norton seems to be working fine but how can hooking up to a hub and DSL have such a lagging affect on NAV???? And how can I get rid of this annoying boot delay??? Thoughts Please

Ok, sometimes Nortan will hang on startup with a software based firewall in operation ... this is a Nortan issue and really the only solutions iv found is to uninstall and reinstall the program(nortan)... I know its a pain but thats the solution as I know it. :D

But just to make sure its the problem, fire up MSconfig -- goto the startup tab and unselect the Nortan entry. Then reboot, see if you notice the same delay or not. Either way go back into MSconfig and re-enable it.

Post back and let me know.

More Problems

Tech,

Ok, here's what I did...went into msconfig and turned off norton>still same lag. I then uninstalled Norton and rebooted>still same startup lag. Went back into msconfig to see what else could be slowing me down. Turned off "Fast", "IPClient", "IPMon32", and "MotiveSB" which all have to do with my Verizon DSL connection>still same lag. Strangly I can still connect to Verizon without any of these utils loading on startup.

Here is exactly what goes on when my computer starts. I can right-click on the desktop but if I put my cursor anywhere on the taskbar it turns into an hourglass. This goes on for about a minute and then it looks to my floppy drive for about 3 seconds...then about 10 seconds later after more hard disk activity I can finally open programs. This is really frustrating and I hope you or someone else can help me out. Attached are 2 screenshots of my msconfig startup (upper half & lower half). Right now I still havent reinstalled Norton.

P.S. sorry about the file sizes...I tried to make them smaller...hope you all have broadband :)
