My volume icon in Taskbar disappeared a few days ago, along with sounds of any kind (internet, iTunes, WMP...). A diagnostic from Fix My PC revealed the error: "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\System32.exe" ...I'm not sure if that's part of this problem or not.

There are no yellow! prompts in the Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers. I haven't identified the virus which likely caused this issue, and I do not have a copy of Windows XP to reinstall as I bought this laptop from my former employer upon leaving the company.

My objective is fix the Sound so it is fully operational again. Any ideas? Please help!

Thank you!

Hi bge2i. Welcome to TSF.

You could try running the command "sfc /scannow" in a command prompt window, which you can access by going to START>ACCESSORIES>COMMAND PROMPT. Let me know if that helps.

Good day.

Hi bge2i,

Please post your computer specs to the best of your knowledge. Posting computer specs definitely helps troubleshoot computer issues better. Is your computer a desktop or a laptop? Try re-instalilng and soundcard drivers and see if that helps. Hope everything works out for you.

Hi bge2i,

Just as an aside, if you want to know exactly what your computer specs are, download a program called Speccy. You can find that program HERE and it's free. That way you don't have to guess.

Good day!

Thanks so much Jeepfreek. I ran your the command as you stated and apparently my system files are alright as I didn't receive a prompt of any kind upon scan completion.

My computer specs are as follows:
Dell D610 Latitude laptop
Intel M 2GHz processor
2GHz RAM
It doesn't mention bit size in System Info so I assume it's 32.

DBCooper:

I can't locate the soundcard in Add/Remove. I there a way I can determine the name of the soundcard I should re-install?

Again, thank you so much for your help - grateful!

Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any yellow marks (not just under sound?) Also, go to View at the top and choose View Hidden Devices. If there are any devices with yellow marks, right click and Uninstall. Then Right click any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. This will start the new Hardware Wizard. If there are no yellow marks, go to Start/Run and type mmsys.cpl and press enter. In the Sound Properties, go to Audio tab and make sure the Playback device is the same as the one in Device Manager. if not choose the Drop Down arrow and choose the right one. Click Volume and make sure nothing is muted.
