When windows opens i first get the message :

"the application or Dll C:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

i then "ok" that to recieve a completely blank desktop, just a blue screen.

I can access some programmes using Task manager. However when i try to access internet explorer, the, "not valid windows image" error returns.

I can access the internet using netscape and have tried to download solutions, however i get the error, "...could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. try again later or contact the server administrator"

Please help, i cant see where else to turn... thankyou

Have you tried this?

Start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

explorer.exe is the Windows Program Manager (or Windows Explorer.) It manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager. By restarting this process the graphical interface for Windows will reappear.
