Hello all, let me tell you a story

I have a PackardBell imedia 1401 desktop. A little while ago it stopped booting to xp. I tried using the 4 master cd's for recovery, but in the Oem screen the message error 10. system <>cd rom. Subsequently I have installed a copy of XP pro, which is working fine...but...no sound and everytime I try to install ac'97 driver it restarts. It seems to happen right at the end of the installation.

I have tried uninstalling the audio device via device manager and reinstalling, but the same thing happens.

is there any other driver that might function? I'm a bit bored with watching the thing restart.

Thanks

Royston

First thing I'd do is go to the mobo manufacturers web site and see if they might have used a different sound chip and driver. Many do in order to not have to slow production while waiting for chips. A Dell I'm working on right now used two different chips. Pretty sure that's typical.

Are you getting the drivers from the manufacturer's site? Is there more than one driver listed and are they for XP?
