I have no sound at all. I don't even have volume controls anymore.
When I try to play audio files, I get an error message that says:
"There is no sound card. Error id= 0x80040256 Remedy= 0x00000000
Either no sound card or its funtioning incorrectly"
I don't know a whole lot about solving tech issues, so if the answer is obvious...forgive my ignorance. I will try to install a new sound card if I have to, to see if it fixes the problem, at this point.

Go to the system control panel, hardware tab, and click on device manager. Do you see any devices with a ! or X next to them? If so, please list them.

Nothing appears to be wrong in the device manager.
No ! or X next to anything.
