Unable to get any sound from my computer, system or sounds from CD. I have a desktop running Windows XP w/ SP2. The original sound card was a Creative Sound Blaster Live. I was having the described problem with it so I replaced it with a C-Media Electronics 4 Channel Sound Card PCI 32bit and still have the same problem. I have tried some of the suggestions mentioned in other posts to no avail. The one thing I tried but could not do is to check my bios to see if the SB driver, etc. has been deleted. HOW DO YOU ACCESS THE BIOS IN Windows XP? Any help is appreciated.

Greetings EBSearcy, and Welcome to TSF!

Have a read of this article, as it describes the various ways to access the BIOS.

Once in the BIOS, you will need to disable your onboard sound and enable your PCI sound card.....don't forget to "exit and save" the changes you make in the BIOS, or you will be frustrated that the problem still exists.

Post back with the results, or if you have any further queries/concerns.

Dave,

I got to the BIOS. Thanks for that information. I was disappointed to find that when I went to the Peripheral Configuration Submenu there was no Option for Audio. The documentation stated as follows: "NOTE: This option is available in integrated audio systems only." Not sure what to do next. I still do not have any sound, system or otherwise.

G'Day EB,

That is dissappointing. :upset:

The documentation stated as follows: "NOTE: This option is available in integrated audio systems only."
The only other possible solution that I can offer you is for you to go here.
This is the C-Media website Driver Download page, you will need to select the PCI Card that you have, and download the Driver for it.

If all else fails, try using the on-board sound [if it is supported].

Post back with how you get on.

Down loaded the driver but no luck. I am not sure what "on-board sound" is so not sure if I have it or not.
Ok EB,

We will need to find out what type of Motherboard you have...so, please go to the link in my signature "Everest™Home Edition"; read the instructions and download the program [it's free!].
Once you have done that, go to The Computer Section, under "summary", and post the details about your system here so that we can determine if you have on-board sound or not.

Dave,

I've got sound. I removed my speaker wires and reinserted them in the sound card jack (there are 4 jacks and I tried a different one) and all of a sudden I have sound. I had tried this before but it was before I downloaded the driver as you suggested. I want to thank you for all of your help.
