hmm

see if you can create a shutdown shortcut....

right click on your desktop and choose "new" then "shortcut"..

enter the folling text into the "target" line:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

name the shortcut "Shutdown" or something like that... this may work for now....
at least so you dont have to leave it running or shut it off without properly shutting down windows...

although, i use this and have since i learned how to make it...
it's way faster using this shortcut...

and, i think if you enter it into the run part of the start bar it works there too. i know it worked when i dropped it into my internet explorer address bar...

oh, and the following line can make a hot restart shortcut...

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindowsexec

try this link

well, i posted a link, but it didnt work. so i cant help more yet...
shortcuts

ok, here they are, the shortcuts i use to hot restart and quick shutdown.
Actually that sounds like it could be a virus . There was a virus going around really rampant about 2 years ago that when you went to shutdown it just grayed out the screen for a second and then took you back to windows .. My advice is to update your virus protection and do a virus scan. Let me know how that works.
i heard of that one

yes, that it could also be...

if the machine wont shutdown it could be that particular virus, or one like it...

but even if you dont want to install the utilities i added, you could try typing the command i mentioned first into the run bar.

that always works for me.

and i saw in another post that this isnt the only problem you are having, so i would second the motion that it is a virus. you might go to www.trendmicro.com and do the free virus scan...

well, i am about out of ideas..

One of the windoze 98 boxes at work does this ocasionally. I do ctl/alt/del then select shutdown and that works. I don't think it's viral, just a cheezy OS.
