no internet for software programs

938 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Fred Garvin
I am using windows 7 and last week tried to install the free ebook reader from
Barnes and Noble. Several hours and many phone calls later I gave up--it said it installed but I couldn't connect to the internet through the program. I thought it was their problem.

Today I tried to install trial version of office 2010 and it won't connect either, nor will my Mc affe, Kindle or any other program that needs internet.
However, my connection is working fine through Firefox.

Please help!

If you open Internet Explorer, can you go to any web pages? If not, click on Tools on your IE menu. Go to Internet Options, click the Connections tab, then the LAN settings button. If there is a check in the box for Proxy settings, uncheck it and try again.
I don't have IE installed, just Mozilla...It used to be there, but I always connect through Mozilla, so didn't realize it til now...going to try and install IE 8--apparently Windows 7 won't support IE 9?

Sorry for dumb questions...
ok--downloaded IE 8 and now it says it is not supported...ARGH!!
You should have internet Explorer already installed. Try this, go to Control Panel, then select Internet Options. click the Connections tab, then the LAN settings button. If there is a check in the box for Proxy settings, uncheck it and try again.
If you have Windows 7, why are you posting in the XP Forum? All flavors of IE are supported in Windows 7. If it's not loading IE8, then you have other problems. Go to Start/Search and type iexplore.exe and press enter. Internet Explorer should open up. If so, go to Help/About Internet Explorer and it should tell you what version you have.
My apologies...

Thank you for the info...
