I can connect from linux but, can't from windows.

I authenticate the username/password with PPPoE (the router is on bridge mode), I receive an IP, I can ping the localhost and yet I can't ping google.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I have uninstalled Avast but the problem persists. Funny thing, when avast was installed it could update (access the internet) but, I couldn't access any site, or ping.

Try isolate the problem, if you disable the Avast and check if you could connect to the Internet. If so, then there would be a settings on your AV needs to be change to allow the connections.

On safe mode with networking I don't have the option to initiate broadband connections (authenticate the username/password). Sounds weird because it should have networking but... ah well, here is the ipconfig /all

On my first post I said "I can connect from linux" in fact I can even connect from windows (with an older usb modem) but, the fact remains that avast must have configured something in a way it shouldn't as a result I can't connect with my Ethernet router.

It could be it mess up the TCP/IP after installing the Avast. Also try reinstalling the NIC driver or look for the updated version if any.

Do you have a CCleaner? Tyr run and see if there is a registry error.

Let's start with some basic information.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

ISP: irrelevant

Router/modem model: speedtouch 516v6

Connection type: wired

Version and patch level of Windows on affected machine: Windows xp SP3

Internet Browser in use: IE7 and Mozilla

When I try to access a web page the following appears:
"Network Timeout"

It's not a modem/ISP issue since I can connect with this very same router on linux (using the same method of authentication, router on bridge mode with PPPoE).
Also with a usb modem I have functional internet connection. (on windows xp sp3)

Here is the info you requested:

I find it very odd that yahoo.com resolves to two different IP addresses here.

With Router:
Pinging yahoo.com [198.18.1.2] with 32 bytes of data:

With USB modem:
Pinging yahoo.com [69.147.114.224] with 32 bytes of data:
Note that the 198.18.1.2 address seems to be unknown A lookup of that address yields:

Whois (IDN Conversion Tool)

Express
DNS Records (Advanced Tool)
Network Lookup
Spam Blacklist Check
Convert Base-10 to IP

URL Decode
URL Encode
HTTP Headers SSL
Email Verification
IP address: 198.18.1.2
No host name is associated with this IP address or no reverse lookup is configured.

Error:Host not found

198.18.1.2 is from Other(XX) in region Unclassified

So, the question is: What's the difference between the USB modem (model unknown) and the Speedtouch 516v6?

Whenever I ping a site (e.g: google.pt), the ip address, with the speedtouch, is a random 198.18.1.X number.
I think it's not resolving the hostnames correctly(when it uses the speedtouch). Any way to solve/confirm that?

Also, what do you mean by the difference? There are so many... one is usb the other is Ethernet, one uses an integrated network card, the other uses the one on the motherboard.. etc etc

The difference is that going through the same connection with the same machine, you get two different address resolutions for the same URL!

Start, Run, NOTEPAD c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS.

Select all and copy and paste to a message here.

Also, try booting in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you get the same result from the router connection.

I'm not sure why this is happening, but let's try a stack reset.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

I don't understand the comment about having to enter name/password. If you're connected to the router, the router is doing the account authentication, you should not have to enter anything.
