No display, no sound

i have a V3000 series compaq laptop and i purchased it last year in februry.
Recently thyere occured a problem in it. my laptop is not showing any display and there is no sound either. There is just a blank screen as if it the laptop is off. However all the button lighs are glowing. I took my laptop to a repair shop and they said that there is some problem with my motherboard. Please help me rectify this problem and let me know if i can do it myself.
