My computer locked up as I was burning a CD. When I rebooted, the computer was unable to find My CD rom or my rewriter. I've already checked to make sure that all cables were connected. They are also not listed in devise manager. In devise manager I show that the primary and secondary IDE controller Dual Fifo has an exclamation mark. I tried to load the windows 98 disk but again the system would not activate my CD Rom. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

one of three things could have happened

1. You IDE cable could have blown

2. Your IDE port on the MOBO is bad

3. Your Bois for some reason either deactivated them or just forgot they were there

1 and 2 will need replacing

3 if your bois lost them then I would set the device to auto and see if they are found if not then 1 or 2 is most likely the problem. If they are found then you problem is half solved. If they are found and then they get lost again I would replace your Bios battery I hoped that helped.

Welcome to Tech Support Forums frenchbuck.......:D

What motherboard is in this machine?

You may need to download the MB drivers and reload them, This all depends on the motherboard and if windows has the driver or not........:D

A thought just popped into my head (i know rare, but it happens) anyway, have you tried using a virus boot disk to check for virus? I just cleaned a computer out with the same problem. He had stealthboot.c
