OK... probably a dumb question but at least the answer should be easy...

If the replaceable battery (CMOS ?) has expired would that explain why no BIOS information is being presented to the monitor ?

go ahead and replace the battery and see if it helps. It won't cost much. If the battery is dead, theres nothing to tell the computer that its a computer. It cannot see anything. It tells the comptuer that it has drives, motherboards and such.

It did boot...but straight to Win98, but even then it never showed anything prior to the windows screen.... now, after a botched OS upgrade attempt, it's not sending anything to the screen... i'll try a new battery... after that it's the dumpster

if its booting to win98, its not the battery. Go into your bio and check the date and time. If its correct then the battery is okay.
