My buddy has a Dell Inspiron 1100, and the backlight for the the screen flashes. You can see the outline of icons on the desktop, but you can't make out what they are. I changed the inverter for the screen, and it made it worse.

Before I changed it, it would go out every few seconds, and you could almost close the laptop and reopen it and it would come on for a few seconds. Now, it flashes on one time and stays off. If you close it and reopen it, it flashes once again and stays off.

What could be the problem?

Thanks
Josh

Other than the inverter, the motherboard, LCD cable, and LCD panel (backlight itself) have the possibility of causing problems like that.

You can move the LCD cable around while it is powered on and see if that causes the screen to flicker more. If it does, replace the cable.

If nothing changes by moving the cable, then I would look at replacing the LCD panel, or replace the backlight itself but that is not easy.

Motherboard causing the screen to flicker or dim like that is pretty rare, I've only seen it once in over a hundred dim displays.
