Hey, I just installed an MSI Geforce 980 TI OC edition, and I lost sound from my normal speakers. I have an MSI Z97 Gaming 3 motherboard. On board audio is enabled in the BIOS and my default playback device is set to my speakers(Realtek High Definition Audio). I tried disabling HDMI audio in Device manager, to no avail. I'm not sure what to do next.

Hi there,

Go to the Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers -> Double-Click on speakers and then set the levels to 100 and see if you get sound.

Another thing you can do is to un-install the motherboard sound drivers and then re-install the drivers and see if this process fixes your sound issue.

Hope everything works out well.

Just did it, still nothing. Its weird because from a software perspective, everything is working fine. I'm getting no errors, it recognizes when I plug in my speakers and when I unplug them, and it shows sound through the green bar next to the playback device.(and yes, my speakers work, I tested them 5 minutes ago) I do get high pitched squeals from the speakers, either when doing something that should produce sound(like watching a youtube video) or the speakers will squeal completely at random. I tested sound from the video card through HDMI and it worked, but as soon as I try to use on board sound, I either get nothing or squealing.

I think you have to backup a little. If this started with the driver for the new video card then that's where I would look. Uninstall whatever software you installed with the video card and see if the sound works.Video will run with basic Windows driver. If not then reinstall audio driver. If it does work go to Msi site and download the newest video driver and install it.

Ok, now that I'm thinking back I should tell the whole story.

I got this PC custom built about a year ago and everything worked except onboard sound. I wasn't concerned because I had also bought a Sound Blaster Z sound card and after installing it, I had sound. Then, when I upgraded the graphics card this past friday, the sound card no longer was listed in device manager and I lost audio. I then removed it and tried to fix onboard sound by starting this thread. Should I keep trying to get the onboard sound to work? Or should I fiddle with the sound card knowing that it worked before the new graphics card?

Oh well that makes more sense no yes by all means the onboard sound may be defective and if the Creative card worked before it should now and the sound would be a lot better anyway with that card.
