I am a first time message board user and I am here because my regular computer seems to be infected with the XP worm-all the fixes I've seen assumes the computer is running-

I can't even start-up-HELP, please! sandy

If you can startup for 30 seconds or so, which is normal, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and call up task manager. Under the Processes tab, find MSBLAST and terminate the task. You'll then be fine until you restart the machine, and you can download the fixes and removal tool.

I recommend you consider a firewall too, since even with the Microsoft patch, the worm can crash your machine if it has access.

When you can't start up, does that mean that you can't boot up to windows??

Well, this is more than the MSBLASTER worm, I think the next attempt should be to boot the XP CD and do a system repair.

Thanks

Thanks for all your help-but in the end we had no choice but to start from scratch and wipe everything out. Out with the old-in with the new-:upset:
