Hi guys,
Yesterday I was struck by a fairly nasty piece of Malware, which led to the reformatting of my hard drive (I'm using Win XP). I reinstalled Windows, and I'm back to the very basics. I have no sound, and no option to connect to wireless.

Right now I'm downloading the Windows Update, but I'm wondering in the mean time if anyone could tell me what to do next. I'm pretty computer-illiterate, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well it sounds like you used a retail version of XP so you will need to do this.
If you have the disk that came with the computer you can put that in and it will help you load the drivers for your sound and wireless card.

If you dont have the disk you will need to get to the manufactures web site to get the drivers.
Most sites work the same.
Go to products and enter your computer model number and name.
Then go to support and usually downloads. Tell it WIndows XP and it will give you the list of drivers.
Download them to a cd and then you can install them.

Hey guys, thanks for the prompt response!

I took Pat's advice first and went to Compaq (my laptop is a V2000, if that helps anyone) and entered my model, and it came up with a list of drivers. Only about half of them seem to download, however. The ones that don't give me a message saying:

"Unable to fullfill your request at this time. Please try again later."

This is when I try to download them straight to my computer, if it makes a difference.

You can post the specs info here.

As for the try again later message they may be doing some maintaince.
Are you trying to run the file from there or are you saving it and then running it?
I would suggest saving and then running so that you have them for the future.

You should only need the latest (ie: newest) version of each driver. Sounds like you currently only really need the audio and NIC drivers. One or both of those may be part of any system or motherboard drivers if they aren't available separately.

Hey again,
I was able to get the sound up and running, however now I'm having trouble with my graphics. I phoned Compaq a couple times today, and now they want to start charging me for my calls (despite having nothing to do with fixing my sound; the second guy told me that I actually have a different model (V2310)).

Anyway, can anyone lend a hand in regards to the graphics? Thanks!

EDIT: I tried installing the Graphics driver that the Compaq site had up for both the V2000 and the V2310, and neither worked.

EDIT EDIT: Just found out that I DO in fact have the V2310.

Update:

I was able to get everything fixed! It turns out that I have the US version of the V2310, and after I made that discovery everything downloaded and worked perfectly- thanks to everyone for the help!

Medugal, spend 1/2 hour making a cd up with all the drivers you may need again.

Chipset
Lan
Audio
Modem
Video
etc

And make a note that Chipset drivers get installed FIRST!
