I recently built a new computer and everything seems to be running smoothly; however, certain games will give me the BSoD upon startup and I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm sure it's hardware but certain games will play. For instance, I'm able to play Skyrim(and HL-2) without any incidents whatsoever. However, when I play Portal 2 or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, before the games even load I get a crash, I also get a strange error message about my GFX card when I attempt to load up L4D-2 (will update with link to a SS of the dialog box when I'm home) and that game runs but very poorly. The only non-steam game I have tried is QuakeLive(browser plugin) and it runs fine as well. All drivers are up to date. Dump file from crashes pasted below.

Here is my SYS info:
AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor
ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD motherboard
PowerColor AX6770 1GBD5-H Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP video card
CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory
Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Acer G235HAbd 23'' 5ms 1920x1080 WideScreen LCD monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1
windows 7 32 bit OS

What I have already ran/checked:
- drivers are up to date.
- memtest86 returned no errors after 5 passes.
- directx 11 is up to date. - sfc /scannow, via cmd.exe, to check for corrupt or missing windows system files. returned no errors.
- ran driver verifier, via cmd.exe, and the system did not BSoD.

While waiting for a reply:

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests (located at this link: Hardware Diagnostics ). They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
Hard Drive Diagnostics (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Resources (read the details at the link)
There are also free, bootable antivirus disks at this link: Free Online AntiMalware Resources - Bootable Disks
Please stop using the Turbo mode (and remove any overclocks) while we're troubleshooting. See if that restores system stability.

Then please run the rest of the free diags at the Hardware Diags page

You have multiple STOP 0x101 and 0x124 errors, this is most likely a hardware error - but it can be caused by compatibility issues, low-level driver problems, or even malware. The diagnostics listed above are the first step in troubleshooting these problems.

Good Luck!

Okay, I have done this, hopefully I did it correctly. resource test said I did not have an antivirus in place but I do, I use avast(paid). If that matters.

Also attached to this post. I'll run the other things you suggested now and post back.

Please ensure that you have all available Windows Updates

Your FNET Turbo USB driver dates from 2008, please update it immediately

You have AMD OverDrive installed on your system. I'm uncertain if this new version is as badly behaved as the old version. Please disable it from the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to see if that helps. If you find that it does help, please post back and let us know.

Beyond that we'll have to wait on the rest of the diagnostics. Good luck!

You ran the long test for SeaGate SeaTools?

Did you run all the video tests? Did all of the tests pass?
My son has a low-end Asus laptop that'll run Left4Dead, I'd have to suspect a problem with your video card (He also has a Radeon HD5770 card that runs it as well).

Please check your video card for:
- sufficient airflow around the card.
- fan is working
- dust/dirt cleaned out of cooler
- power plug firmly seated into the card

Beyond that, I'd have to suggest trying another video card. DO NOT buy one unless you can return it for a full refund!!!

Okay. I have disabled overdrive, I ran windows update and am now installing the latest updates. After I restart I'll try to run a game again, if it fails I'll run the long test.

I can check the video card again, but when I put the thing together last week all of those checked out. However, when I was putting the card in I had some issue with getting it to set right and had to move it around a bit. I suppose that could have damaged it?

I did not see anything about a video test? Please elaborate.

Thanks!

I had this problem with a Dell computer at work - and it spit out STOP 0x124 errors all day long.

I removed the card and very, very carefully reseated it and all was well after that.
Clean out the slot that the card fits in also.

See where it says "More Video Stress Tests" at this link: Hardware Diags

Okay, I took the side panel off and looked at the card. Well I found out its not seated perfectly flush with the case(slightly to the side and the hole from the case and the card to screw in are not at all flush). However, when I moved the card so that it was flush with the case I could not get signal to my monitor and the fan on the card would not turn on. If it's in the wrong how could I still run Skyrim/HL2/quake?

Do I need to buy a new card? I believe I still have ~10 days left to return the one I currently have. Should I simply change it out for the same card or should I try getting a different card? If I need a different card how can I check compatibility?

the case I have:
Newegg.com - Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case, comes with Three Fans-1x Front Blue LED 120mm Fan, 1x Top 140mm Fan, 1x Rear 120mm Fan, option Fans-2x Side 120mm Fan

Do not buy/get a new card just yet.

REMOVE the card from the system completely
Clean out the slot that it was in.
Then place the card back in - very, very carefully!!!

Then see if it works properly. If not, then it's time to return the card and get a new one.

How could it run the other games? I don't have the slightest clue. Nor did I have the slightest clue how the one that I installed could display video - but it did.

well, I took it out and cleaned(as best i could figure how to) and it still does the same. Suppose it's time to buy a new card and return this bad boy. You don't happen to know of a compatibility checker or something so I can be sure I don't buy another card that won't fit?

Nope, you just read the specs at the mobo manufacturer's website and select a fitting video card. FWIW - almost any nVidia or ATI card should work as long as it'll fit in the slot.
that seems to be the problem. The card couldn't slip into the mobo because it was slightly to short and the case was in the way. But that information would be in the specs?
