New PC

Hey guys, I just recently ordered a new computer that I put together. After installing Windows XP with service pack 3 and all my drivers and etc. The computer was running fantastic, I had the CPU overclocked relatively high, but it can definitely handle it. I've been turning it off at night and during the hot weather to work in the CPU properly. But a couple days later or so, I left it running for a few hours, when I had got home I moved the mouse to clear the screensaver and the computer was just absolutely slow. The cursor would hardly move and even opening a folder practically locked it up. I restarted my PC thinking it'd be a fix, but it literally hangs at the Windows boot screen for about five minutes every time. Once it finally boots into Windows it is yet again very slow, the sound when playing music and videos is a laggy stop and go thing.

It is pretty late here, but I guess in the morning I'll do some trial and errors on the sucker. It's just a pain in the *** to encounter something like this with a brand new computer and HOPEFULLY it is not hardware problems.

If anyone has any ideas though it'd be great!

Thank you.

"I had the CPU overclocked relatively high, but it can definitely handle it."

Seems like you were wrong about that.
Overclocking a new PC I would never do.
Experimenting with overclocking on an old PC out of warranty, yes.
But a new one, bad call.

It's part of MSI's OC'ing Genie. Which yeah, I turned it off and no difference.

It would help to know the hardware involved?
MSI 870A-G54 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Athlon II X4 3.0GHz AM3
2 x 2GB Crucial DDR3
ASUS Radeon 4850 HD 1GB 256-Bit DDR3
Fairly new 1TB Seagate HDD
Check in the Bios on the PC health page for the CPU and System temps, as well as the voltages for the 3.3v, 5v. 12v rails.

What PSU are you using?

Yeah, I constantly monitor the temps including my GPU, especially when I was OC'ing. CPU doesn't really ever go any higher than 30C.

My PSU is a Corsair 550W with 41A on 12v rail. It should definitely be enough.
Troubleshooting is a process of elimination we don't ask for temp readings and voltage reading for no reason, software programs for reading sensors are often wrong the bios is the most accurate, so once you get the bios readings you then have something to compare the software readings to for accuracy.

Yup. I do check in bios and compare. But, I will try installing Windows on an old junk drive and see what happens. I'm pretty sure it will fix it, I just don't understand why the current one started doing that. Maybe like Pip said, OC'ing it caused some type of system instability, which may of corrupted something. I don't know though, computers have a mind of their own sometimes. :normal:
Again it runs fantastic with a clean install like I was thinking. I guess I'll try reformatting the main HDD and see how she runs after a while. It is just extremely annoying and a pain. If anyone still has any ideas, it'd be great though.
I reseated everything and reapplied new heatsink grease. I'm now on a fresh install of Windows again, it is running great, maybe better than before...

But we'll see how she runs in the next few days or weeks, hopefully I don't encounter any more problems for a long time. If system instability occurs again, I'll probably have to look towards hardware. However I will not be quite sure what to do, as it is hard to determine what is faulty in a situation like this; ram maybe?

Thanks for the support.

Hello again. Unfortunately I'm not here just to say hi. My PC yet again started to run slower, but not as bad, until it completely crashed again. This time Windows Boot screen doesn't even run, it says \WINDOWS\system32\config failed to run or is corrupted. I can't quite remember as I already took out HDD to back it up on this PC. :normal: Previously I got BSD before it stopped loading Windows completely. I ran Memtest86+ again and no signs of problems, until I was showing my buddy the bios on my PC and I set my RAM at 1600MHz from 1333MHz, it is suppose to be 1600MHz RAM anyways, but bios sets it at 1333MHz by default. I wasn't paying attention, but Memtest86+ then booted again and when I turned around there was about 65,000 errors. This last install of Windows I didn't change RAM at all though, it was at 1333MHz which displayed no errors. I had doubts, but maybe, I like to put RAM in socket furthest from CPU heat sink from heat dissipation. When I tried putting RAM in suggested slot by my MSI motherboard, it doesn't even post at 1600MHz, however 1333MHz does. Do you propose that this could actually be faulty RAM, just not displayed at 1333MHz? I'm not quite sure what the probing option in Memtest86+ does, but that just locks it up at 5% and displays like 300 errors.

I only have one stick of RAM for the PC as I got it confused with this one. It is DDR3, so I can't test between the two. Any help would be great, this is SO annoying and really my computer is not usable if I have to reformat it every week, give or take. I would expect a little more from Crucial.

Thank you!

Yeah. I don't really have $50 bucks to spend on another stick if its not the problem. I don't think I know anyone with DDR3 computers, but would contacting Crucial probably be best bet?
