Is that a HP OEM Media Center cd?

If a HP OEM cd you would call HP to ask them why this isn't registering which is what appears to be the main issue. You can not get updates without being registered.

A number of OS items sold on ebay are not legal copies and are actually scams since the contents of the cd had already been black listed by microsoft. FYI

this was not purchased from ebay, it came from newegg.com. it was brand new in an unopened package from microsoft. it just says oem system builder pack on it. i installed this on the same computer once before without this problem. i know just enough about computers to get me in trouble....lol not sure what's differrant this time. i'm sure i could get it registered but for some reason there appears to be no way to connect to the internet.........

what happens when you try to activate. Also what key are you using the one that came with the system or the one from the oem xp disk you purchased from newegg?

fyi- even though it worked before, it is oem and per microsofts eula the computer is not eligible to use it. Oem is only for a newly built computer that never had an os on it before.

just a quick note..............it accepted the key code
OK so, it accepted the key code and you are now activated? Now go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, every device with a yellow mark will need to have a driver installed. If this is a name brand computer (HP, Dell, Gateway etc) go to the computers manufacturers support/download drivers page and type in your make and model # and it will take you to the download page for your particular computer. Download and install all drivers for your particular machine.

I would go to HP's website and download the network card drivers for your computer. Once you get connected online, you can try and activate Windows.

If that goes ok, go into Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs and click Add or Remove Windows Components on the left side. Try to reinstall IE and Outlook Express.

ok......it accepted the key code to let windows install only...........i went to hp's website and downloaded the driver for the nic card ( on a differant computer).....it says the device is working properly. however under network connections it is not seeing my network in there at all. i've gone through everything under properties when i right click the network adapter and all seems fine. when i goto add or remove programs and on the left side where you can upload windows components.........there is nothing under ie or outlook to load..........very puzzling.
it seems as though the internet connection should be working but for some reason it's not seeing it..........

just to ensure that the driver installation worked, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager go to network adapters and double click the (hopefully now named) network card and see what it says its status us. If it says the device cannot start or there is a problem with the driver, that might be it. If it says the device is disabled for some reason, just right click and enable it in that device list. If it still says unknown device or no driver installed, something went wrong and that wasn't the correct driver. I know on HP's website the naming is just stupid and it's hard to tell what's some random optional wireless card that nobody has, what's the dial up modem, and what's the actual network card driver download.

it sees the network card and it says there are no conflicts and the device is working properly so the card is up and running............it just won't see my internet connection.

i'm not sure what these are and am downloading the drivers that hp has available to see if they will work..........i'll post back shortly with an update on that. on a side note the sound and video are working fine.

Go to Start/Run and type inetcpl.cpl and press enter press LAN Settings. Make sure all of these boxes are unchecked. Now go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. Right click the Local Area Connection if it's Disabled, then Enable it. Go to Properties. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) /Properties. Make sure that Obtain an IP Address and Obtain a DNS Server address automatically are both checked. Now go to Start/Run and type CMD and press enter. In the Command Prompt type in ipconfig /release the IP address should turn to 0.0.0.0. Now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew and press enter. You should get a new IP address.

When you type ncpa.cpl and press enter, in the Network Connections it is blank, there are no icons?? But you can plug in your Ethernet cord and get an internet connection??
Go into the Setup (Bios) and see if Ethernet or Network Adapter is Disabled. Then Enable it.

yes that is correct......no icons showing an internet connection. i went into the bios and it has the onboard lan connection enabled. i had an extra harddrive that has windows xp pro on it but i would not pass the windows verification process. i just hooked that up to this computer and i have no problem getting on the the internet, so the problem has to be software related to the ms 2005 media center edition that i am trying to get working that has a good keycode. i'm kinda out of things to try.......
