i have just upgraded to windows ME and everytime i boot up it comes up with finding new hardware (display adapter) and recognises it as a cirrus logic 5446 pci, it then installs the software for the new device and makes me restart again, how come it keeps saying it is new hardware everytime?

Have you tried starting in safe mode then going to device manager and see what is listed in there for display adapters?

Is that the correct card?, sometimes Windows will detect hardware and install drivers for it.. but it wont be the right card therefor the next time it boots it will see another card that has unassigned drivers and again (guess wrong) what the card is.. this pattern will continue until the computer is thrown out the window, or that sorry excuse for an OS is removed.

Make sure that the card its installing drivers for is the right one and that no error messages are being displayed while the drivers are installing. Also if it prompts you to reboot now or later choose later make sure the hard drive is done being written to, then shutdown and reboot.
