New DVD rom

Hi there, i just installed a new DVDrom, i installed it fine, as far as i know.
It opens and closes and the light flashes, however it does not read disks, and doesnt show up in "My Computer".
I still have a normal CDrom drive in, which is working normal.

check if you can see it listed in the bios
check you have the jumpers set correctly
is it a dvdrom or a dvdrw burner
if it is a burner use an 80 wire ide cable set it as master on the end of the cable and the cd as slave connected to the middle plug
