new DSL Modem

my dsl connection has been up/down but mostly down for last two week. I bought a new ADSL modem this week and hooked it up last night. it still only worked 85% of the time over the evening (using freeping). however, it has worked perfectly all day - pings are at 1005 for the last 10 hours. I'm trying to figure out why.

Anyone know if DSL modems work better after they've been connected for several hours? Do they "learn" the line?

If your in the UK some providers will start you of Slow then over a period of time up your speed, mainly ADSL connection have this
